Alternator belt squeal? The alternator meets the demands of the battery,or tries its best. If alt. is loading down it's more than likely due to high output. High output could be due to heavy loading of battery or the battery itselfis demanding too much.
Charge rate should be 23.6 to 14.2 volts. at 12v the alternator is pouring out some major amps and won't last very long. Have your battery tested and chk the fluid levels. Cable connections clean and tight? Any off road lighting added? It's not the alternator, YET!

If the belt is 3 yrs old or older, change it. If it has oil or anti-freeze or grease on it, change it. If new, add more tension to the belt.

I have changed all belt driven systems on the front of my 3800 park avenue and it still sqeals

squeals don't necessarily mean the belts it can be the power steering pump or the belt adjusters, even the water pump and so on adjuster for the belt if the spring adjuster is weak will not put the correct tension on the belt and it will slip, bearings in alternator can squeal when warm or cold depending on the bearing fault after time the rumble and over heat the alternator in turn lose power to the battery, power steering pump this can squeal if the bearing in the pump is dry, or there is a leak as this lets moisture into the pump. hope this helps would first check the belt adjuster and also clean the parts the belt goes round with a wire brush, and repainting them helps them stop rusting up, cheap spray paint and leave to dry before fitting belt, or use brush paint will take longer to dry but will last longer.

Do I have a bad alternator?

Do you hear any squealing when you drive the car? If so the belt is slipping so yes. Replace it anyway because you don't want it to snap and Replace the battery. Retest the charging voltage you are looking for 12.7v to 13.9 if you don't have a multi meter take it to another garage and ask nicely if they could check the charging voltage most will not charge but you want the voltage NOT pass/ fail or its fine
I recommend this as some battery faults can give faulse charging readings

1986 Cutlass battery gage shows my battery isnt getting a good charge unless i hit the gas .

Yes, a slipping belt can certainly affect alternator output. Squealing could be a bad belt, but check all the pulleys for the belt for roughness or wobble-bad pulley.

It's very cold outside, my battery light is on and it's hard to steer my car?

Are you sure that you don't have power steering? It sounds to me like you have a leak in your power steering and low on fluid. The battery light is usually an indication that your alternator is not charging.

When I turn on my 97 4 runner there is a squaling noise for a few minutes. Does not happen everytime. What could this be?

sounds like the alternator belt is loose, it stops squealing after a few minutes because the alternator finally catches up with what power you used out of the battery for start up and stops charging so much and there isnt as much drag on the belt then, hope this helps

Replaced pressure line on power steering. now battery light comes on. belt squeeled when started, then stopped. Did power steering fluid get on belt and caused it to squeal and slip?

If you have a 4cyl then the belts for PS and alternator are separate. Taking a peek under the hood when the engine is running should give you a better idea if a belt is slipping, broken, etc. A common source of squealing is an alternator belt that is too loose and slips under heavy load charging the battery after startup. It's possible that some sort of problem happened due to replacing alternator belt but that belt slipping should be pretty easy to see. (again ... speaking of the 4cyl / 22RE enging)

Battery keeps dying

Battery failure can be caused by multitudes of issues but the two most prevalent are.
1. Bad battery or aged battery. The battery itself if old can have a dead cell.. this means an area of the battery isnt functioniong properly. Its a sealed batter so no way to fix just the area. The battery would need to be replaced. Look for corosion on the terminals, tight connections, and any leakage around the battery of fluids. DONT ADD WATER to battery as this is not advised for newere sealed batteries. A battery will not hold a charge with a bad cell.. So it may charge a bit but will die again after a short period.

2. The alternator is the item that recharges your battery during driving. It creates enough voltage to run the car and then put extra back into the battery. If its bad it wont charge the battery. If you ve noticed your lights dimming, flickering, flashing. Static or hum in radio, etc. then it could indicate a bad alternator.

3. A loose serpentine belt can cause the alternator to not function properly so it should be checked for glazing (very shiny) or cracked. You might hear a squeal at start up of the motor with a loose or damaged belt.

Your local autoparts store has a system that will place the charging system (Battery adn Alternator) under a load. This will help diagnose if the alternator is producing enough current or if the battery is holding that charge. The diagnosis is free and Autozone, Advance, and Oreilly all perform this at curbside.. You dont have to get your hands dirty and they can tell you the issue. If battery they offer free battery installation with battery purchase. If alternator and you are handy with DIY.. you can change yourself with relative ease.
