Here is what i remember ... there was a class action law suit against VW about the high failure rate of the coils especially for the 4 cyl cars with turbo ... VW lost and agreed to install heat shields around the coils ... not sure what years are involved but you might check with a VW dealer to see if you come under that agreement .. as i recall VW charged a fortune for the replacement coils and labor.. a few years ago you could expect a second coil to go bad and even a third or all eventually .. VW would only change one coil at at time when in warranty .... the replacement coil did not appear to be an improved version .. .. it looks like VW is obligated to install the heat shields on models included in the suit ..

CEL light flashing-shuddering when idle. 03 passat 1.8 Turbo. Thinking its an air leak somewhere? Can hear air but can't figure out where its coming from...

A flashing cel indicates misfiring. A common problem is a bad ignition coil. The easiest route for diagnosis is the check the trouble codes(autozone and some other parts stores will scan for free, or an OBDII code reader is not too expensive to buy). The code should tell you which cylinder is misfiring(PO301 means cyl #1, 302 cyl #2, etc). Once you know which it is, swap the ignition coils around. If you have a #1 misfire, swap coils 1 and 4, clear the codes, then check it again. If the misfire moves, you know you've got a bad coil. If the misfire is air or fuel related, as with an intake leak, other codes should come up as well as the misfire.

When the engine is on high rpm it starts to shake like work on 3 cylinders , but then when i turn it off and restart it run good on 4 cyl, i don't feel the power of turbo like before ! what is the...

The aftermarket coil could be the problem. Or one of the other coils. But I would say that it is either a coil, spark plug or spark plug wire.

I have a 2003 vw passat turbo the dealer said it needed a coolant flush due to sludge. I paid $75 for flush, then they said need diagnostic another $79. After they said oil cooler leaking. How do I know if...

Switch mechanics. You can get free diagnostic from parts stores. If the oil cooler is leaking, you will see it--and $450 is too high. The part is less than $100!!!
