SOURCE: How do you replace an 1997 Audi A4 quattro fuel pump?
if your talking about the lock ring on the tank there is a special tool but a brass chisel and hammer can be used to turn the ring until its loose enough to unscrew by hand. if this is about removing the pump from the bottom of the tank then there is a special tool for that also but it can be removed by hand you just have to twist it counter-clockwise. and it will be not be easy to turn but i have done it just have a rubber glove on to pad your hand or its going to hurt.

You can check in the trunk and remove the felt cover see if there is a round panel cover that you can remove to get to the tank. If your unlucky and have to remove the tank you will have to remove the tank. ut it is not to difficult to do, if you drive it till the gas is almost out you can remove the two bolts that hold the tank in place. Use wd-40 to spray on the bolts and also spray the hinges on the oppitse side of the straps. once the nuts are off drop the tank down. You will need to pull the screws off the tank filling tube so it will come down as well. drop the tank down far enough for you to get to the fuel tank sending unit. it will have philips screws holding it in place. Mark two spots with a felt tip pin, (Sharpe) white is better and mark two holes so you can line the it back up for the holes and the hoses. disconnect the fuel line and return line disconnect the battery of the car for safety then pull the wires off it can be a plug or it may have nuts on them. When you remove the nuts or screws out pull the pump out and you will have to angle the pump to get the float out. I recommend that you replace the pump and the sock on the end of the pump. Do not buy after market buy factory replacement only you only want to do this once. mark the new pump holes on the pump using the old pump as an example, will save a lot of time to get it to fit in and match and the lines will line up, tighten all screws up put the lines back on and the clamps and reinstall the tank in place. yo can use your knees to hold it in place till you get the clamps lined up and started. Screw the nuts down till tight and your set to go just hook up the battery again and your set to go.
SIde Note, Never let your car get below 1/4 of tank of fuel, the reason is gas is the coolant for the pump if it goes lower than that the pump will heat up and will burn out. Many people don't know this so I thought I would add this to your knowledge
