The transmission has no pressure to engage the internal parts. This could be a plugged filter or an electrical problem. Park is a different problem. Either the park pawl inside the transmission is broken or maybe the shift linkage has loosened enough so the linkage is not moving the selector shaft.
The linkage may have become worn out, disconnected or bent.
The linkage consists of the parts that physically connect the gear shift (on the steering column) to the transmission itself. This is a fair distance so it is very possible that over the years wear or damage has caused it to no longer function the way you might expect. Sometimes, you can even feel that there is nothing connected to the gear shift. Look under the car to see if you see anything hanging down, etc. You may need to have the vehicle towed to be repaired if unable to shift out and into park. Linkage repairs are *far* less costly than transmission repairs. Good luck!
it sounds like you reconnected the linkage in the wrong position so it can still go into the forward gears but there is not enough cable length to allow for reverse and park to be engaged disconnect the linkage again and use trial and error to get it back to where you need it also the linkage should show you where the bolt was that tightened it but if you took it off and then moved either the linkage or the transmission gear selector arm on the transmission now its not in the position it was when you disconnected it resulting in this problem of no access to the other shifter points park reverse and you will have to check all gear shifts till you get it right but if it was in park when you took it off take the linkage off move the trans gear selector to park and reconnect it where the old marks are and you should be O.K.LATER MAN!
The shift linkage and gear selector/neutral safety switch are integrated into a small flat unit on top of the transmission located under the battery tray which has 4 bolts 10mm to remove. The shift lever is exposed when the tray is removed and may be obstructed by something that has fallen in its path like loose wire harness, work glove, you name lt. Check all fuses in fuse box then visually inspect the movement with a helper moving the shifter. The shift mechanism itself may be worn out and happens frequently. Good luck.
loosen up the linkage at the transmission a little, click the linkage i click on the transmission(shift it manually to reverse),put the gear selector in the car in reverse, then tighten the linkage.see if that helps.
