SOURCE: truck won`t always start

Here are some things to try... First, make suire all battery and starter connections are secure; then if it won't crank, at the starter solenoid (on top of starter) there are two wires, the fat one providing the actual voltage that operates the motor, and the smaller wire that carries the starter actuation control voltage, when the key is turned to "Start". being very careful not to touch grounded metal, use an insulated pair of pliers or screwdriver to connect these two posts together, delivering the always present 12 volts direct from battery to the solenoid. If the starter is good, this should make it crank, indicating a problem further upstream in the crank circuit. If it doesn't crank, you have a bad starter... You can also check this with an inexpensive 12 V test light... ground the clip lead and hold the probe tip to the smaller terminal while having a helper turn the key... If the crank impulse is reaching the starter, the light will come on, and if the light is on but no cranking it is the starter.

If the crank impulse is not reaching the starter, it could be caused by any of the things in the start circuit. The voltage that is supposed to trigger the starter originates from the under dash fuse panel and goes through a kind of self resetting circuit breaker that can be tripped by excessive current heating a short length of resistance wire sufficiently to cause a bi-metal contact strip to curl away from its mating contact and breaking the start circuit... If your problem was heat related, I would suspect the breaker. From there the voltage goes through the ignition switch, and from the ignition switch it goes through a safety interlock circuit which is different for automatic and manual transmissions.

Automatics have "neutral safety" switches that break the circuit if the car is not in park or neutral, and this switch can either be under the shifter cover or built into the transmission. You can try jiggling the shifter while trying to crank; an intermittently faulty switch will usually show some effort to crank (possibly briefly) while doing this.

Manual Trannys have a switch that breaks the start circuit if the clutch pedal is not fully depressed, mounted under the dash in contact with the clutch pedal arm. Working the clutch pedal while holding the key in crank position might produce intermittent start efforts if this is the problem.

If you can locate whichever of these switches you have, you can also use the test light to (1) see if the start signal is coming out of the ignition switch and (2) going through the interlock switch.

You can also temporarily bypass these switches by shorting together or jumpering the two connectors on the switch.

I had a similar problem with my 1991 Prelude that ended up being the starter, and it was HUMIDITY related, of all things! I had driven through some high water by necessity, high enough that the starter was submerged, and then experienced your exact same symptoms... Showed up especially in humid, cold, or rainy weather, The water had washed dirt/sand into the solenoid engagement mechanism and had eroded lubricant, causing the solenoid to bind and not fully engage. Starter replacement solved the problem!

Hope this helps you get it fixed, but don't hesitate to post a comment or question if you need more help, and best of luck!

SOURCE: glow plug system will not cycle

Do you have dual fuel tanks? Place the return fuel line from the back of the fuel pump in a bucket and see if it will start. If yes replace the fuel tank switching valve. It may switch supply side ok, but not return side and if so it is plugging the return, which will cause a no start stuation. If it starts running the return line into a bucket replace the switching valve.

ok, think about mass that moves under the forces of braking, things like engines and gearboxes, have you checked all those mounts for integrity, have a look to see if anything has been rubbing, new shiney spots appearing that weren't there before.

My 1998 dodge 1500 laramie (5.9 liter) won't

hi,

no,

check to see if its getting fuel. find the fuel rail service valve(it looks like a bicycle tire valve on the fuel line and has a cap on it)
hold it open while you crank it to see if fuel is present. if no fuel then its time for a fuel pump. if theres fuel pressure there during cranking then I would suggest taking it in to a shop to have the codes pulled on it rather than trying to diagnose anything else further...jm

I have a gmc Yukon denali. It wouldn't start and

Sometimes new starters have to be shimmed so that the gear on the starter lines up with the gear teeth on the flywheel on the motor. The grinding noise is the reason I say that is what's wrong. If there were shims already there, try taking them out. I hope this helps you

GMC safari won't start, new coil, ICM, plugs (delco) Wires, cap, rotor, get's gas, new starter.

This just happened to my Dad's 1998 GMC Safari...

Firstly...

Check the hard vacuum line as previously noted by others.
If that's ok, then take off the intake pipe and spray brake clean into the throttle body while trying to crank it.

If it starts.. then you have a fuel related issue, if it doesn't start then you have an electrical related issue.

Our van did not start after trying to use brake clean.

Take off the console inside the vehicle's cab and get at the distributor.

Usually people noted that the ICM (ignition control module, inside the distributor) was the main issue here, but on our van, the distributor and wires looked brand new so it was probably recently changed (we got this van 5 months ago), so I assumed the spark plugs were also changed at the same time.

We unplugged the connection from the coil to the distributor, tried to crank it, and no spark was being generated, boom, got a new coil and starts up fine.

Just takes a bit of trial and error.

My 94 fors Taurus cuts out while driving and sometimes will not start. It cranks but won't start. We changed the fuel pump, spark plugs and distributor cap, but it is still cutting out while driving...

are there any codes? have you checked the pressure in the fuel line. you may have a bad fuel pressure regulator. or a bad crank position sensor. spray starter in the throttle body and see if it starts

I'm having trouble with my brakes for a 1993 cutlass ciera s and lately I been hearing a rubbing and grinding noise coming from my rear brakes could anyone tell me what kind of problem this is ?

My first question would be have you taken the drums off and looked at the brake shoes yet ?
You won't know whats going on until you do.
It could be worn out shoes, or a broken spring rubbing the drum, or any number of things.

I can't get my land rover discovery 1999 to start!I go to turn it over and it acts like it wants to start but it won't.I have replaced the fuel filter, the fuel pump, put a new battery in it,and a start

Sounds like a dead short between the starter and the battery. Check the cables under the hood for anything that has rubbed through.

However, it is more likely to be the control line to the solenoid that is shorting out. Trace that line from the solenoid up to the firewall first, than drop the panel under the steering wheel and look there. Use a multimeter set to ohms with one probe on a solid part of the frame and the other probe to the solenoid wire - there should NOT be any reading. If there is, the wire is earthing out

I have a 1993 Toyota Marino with a 4aFE engine. it's fuel consumption is very poor, 6.5km/liter. I have changed spark plugs, spark plugs reeds, fuel injectors and nothing changing. I checked the check...

Well you got half the tune up done, So replace the fuel filter and air filter. Gets some brake cleaner and clean inside the throttle body. check all the vacuum lines and make sure they are not broke or leaking. Also check the catalitic converter/s, These start clogging and will excessive fuel consumption.

Car won,t start. The problem is fuel related. if i use starting flid it will start momentarily. the fuse for the fuel pump is good. the relay under the hood for the fuel pump is ok. is there a safety cut...

well the bottom line is: is there fuel flowing? I would find the closest joint/cpling to the throttle body, disconnect it and crank the engine. Is there fuel coming out?
