1990 Buick Riviera Transmission won't shift out of low.

My 90 Riviera was working flawlessly up until yesterday. Tranny oil was leaking into the radiator, so I installed a big transmission cooler, and bypassed the radiator altogether. Upon completing the job, I took it for a test drive, and the transmisssion wouldn't shift out of low. Brought the car back home, and un-did all the work, and it still won't shift. What the heck did I do?!! 166K on the car.

Your in-radiator transmission cooler has failed, and most likely you have gotten coolant in your trans along with the trans fluid in your coolant.

The external cooler you installed is a good idea, on a couple of levels. First, it separates your fluids, so no more cross contamination. Second, it keeps engine heat separated from transmission heat, allowing both to run a bit cooler.

If you haven't already, you can drain and flush BOTH the engine coolant and transmission. For the trans, you will need to do it a couple of times, because there is a lot of fluid in the torque converter (the part between your engine & trans) that normally doesn't get drained during a trans fluid change. Be sure to change the transmission filter each time.

If this doesn't work, then I'm afraid that you will have to rebuild your transmission.

On my Vauxhall/Opel Senator I snagged a cable from the auto box which left the car in a 'limp home' mode. I'm no mechanic but once the cable was re-attached the car was fine.

I have a 1995 Buick Riviera. It goes really slow at first & rpms go up. Then it will start driving like it should. Only happens when I take off from a stop. Fluid level good

The transmission may not be dropping in low gear. Manually shift the transmission into low when you come to a stop then shift to second and then 3. See it that works. Could have control valve problems.

Cause of rough idle/1990 buick riviera/3.8 l

I agree with the possible bad fuel theory. You would need to figure out if the miss is a fuel problem or ignition problem to proceed.
I would pull the plugs and look at them, also check for vac leaks.
Is the check engine light on when the engine is running ? If so check for trouble codes.

Transmission is leaking -- what are possible solutions? Leak is getting worse each week -- no slippage of gears. This is automatic w/overdrive.

clean the tranny bottom to determine whether fluid is coming from the gasket...if so you probably need you change the fluid and filter any way, you can replace that gasket then....make sure that it is tranny fluid, and not engine oil from an oil seal at the front of the tranny....if the leak is in the rear of the tranny replace the rear seal....good luck, hope this helps

Wanna know if i can put a tranny for basic 1995 riviera in my Supercharger

you will most probably need a beefed up tranny to take the power of the engine, I have just installed a 350 supercharged chevy motor in my sons car with a Turbo 350 transmission and a shift kit which I have been told by an auto trans mechanic may not take the power of that engine.
It is costing him $1500 australian to have it reconditioned so I hope it will survive the rides

Tranny in 1991 riviera

sounds like a transmission front pump whine. Unfortunately the only solution is transmission removal. History tells me, it most likely will require a complete overhaul.

Not a computer issue. Transmission has problems could be filter stopping up, which also means problems.

Transmission problems

they should have suggested changing tranny screen and filter if tranny isnt maintained every 20,000to 30,000 you end up with gray like particles from normal wear wich get caught in the screen and valve body wich leads to erractic shifting valve body problems eventually tranny replacement number 1 rule oil changes on motor and screen and filter on tranny prevents premature wear longer life to two major key factors
