Chevy 1500 4x4

It is a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 z71 with 4x4 and a 5.3l motor what would cause the rear end to keep going out? this is about the 5th time it has went out. could i put a 2500hd rear end in it and do they make the 2500hd rear ends with six lug?

the outer bearings can be driven in using a suitable Very Large socket. Removing the old ones either requires a puller or a cutting torch. I use either depending on the state of the bearings.
when driving new ones in, make sure

  1. your socket wont jam in with the bearing
  2. you only hit against the outer bearing shell
  3. you keep it very straight
  4. hit it til you hear a resounding solid clunk as the bearing reaches full insertion.
  5. you fit a new oil seal
  6. use a block of wood across the oil seal face to protect it as you knock it in - keep it straight!
To answer the other question, yes you do have to remove the driveshaft to replace the oil seal. the Diff ack-plate has to be removed, the locking horseshoes from the ends of the driveshaft, & the wheels. It takes about 1 hour to remove them & clean the backplate. about another to reassemble.

I would suggest a rear differential service. When the fluid breaks down in the rear it doesn't provide the proper lubrication for the rear and you'll hear the "moan". Don't forget to buy and add the limited slip(posi-trac) additive.

As far as the rear end noise, There was a TSB released on GMC light duty trucks that says "Some owners of light duty trucks equipped with automatic transmissions may comment that the vehicle exhibits a clunk noise when ******* between Park and Drive, Park and Reverse, or Drive and Reverse... Whenever there are two or more gears interactin with one another, there must be a certain amount of clearance between those gears in order for the gears to operate properly. This clearance of freeplay (also known as lash) can translate into a clunk noise whenever the gear is loaded and unloaded quickly, or whenever the direction of rotation is reversed." It goes onto say "...Whilse some owners may find the clunk objectionable, this will not adversely affect durability or performance."

you can count the teeth on the ring gear and divide that # by the tooth count on the pinion. An example is: ring gear 100, pinion 10 ...100divided by 10 is 10, expressed as 10 to one. (fake #) your diff is likely a 3 series such as 3.23 to 1. or a four series such as 4.11 to 1. If you have four wheel drive it is critical to match exactly. if not you can get better performance by changing ratio to something that better fits your needs. 4 series pull loads well, 3 series are better on fuel.(depending upon terrain)

My rear brakes are getting way too hot on my 2000 Chevy Silverado. What could be causing this? I just replaced the brake pads and rotors. The back brakes seem to be seizing up and I can't figure out why.

This year of truck did have issues with rear disc brakes. Quality of pads is extremely critical. Go with the AC Delco pads and rotors to eleviate some of the issue. Make sure that the slide pins are liberally lubricated and move freely or drag will cause excessive heat to occur. Let me know if you need anything else.

Power steering and brake line location2002 Chevy Silverado 2500HD

the power steering lines are very short hoses approximately 8 inches long that go from the power steering pump down to the steering box, which is located on the frame, just below the pump. The brake lines run from the master cylinder(where you fill it with fluid on the drivers side firewall) down to the frame, and then follow the frame both directions; both to the front end and the rear end, along the drivers side frame rail, just on the inside of it. The fuel line runs along the same path to the rear.

Rear end clunk in Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup

The noise is caused by the axle button being worn out, this lets the axle move back and forth and clunk, this is a unique problem with C clip retained axles, it is a noise issue but will not fail and cause any more damage, in order to fix it you must have the axles pulled and the diff carrier checked for excess wear where the axle retainning C clip rides, if the carrier is ok then replace the axles.
