1997 VW Jetta GL not turning over after engine is warmed up

The car has gone from reliable to only starting (turning over) when cold. I turn the key after the engine is warmed up and get nothing. I have cleaned the battery terminals and checked the battery with no problems. Is this a starter, ignition coil or something else. How can I determine what the problem is without fixing one thing after another?

2001 VW Jetta GL TDI will not start. I checked the battery, and it is fine. Engine turns over when I turn the key, but it seems like no fuel is getting to the engine.

If you have blue/grey smoke coming out of the tailpipe, you are getting fuel, you can also check to see fuel if you pull back the braided cover on the fuel line (left front side of engine compartment). If you see smoke, check the glow plug relay (180) under the dash.

'96 VW Golf GL with 2.0 motor. Cold start knock

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)
