Oil pan gasket on 740 gle station wagon.

Hi, i have an issue with our 740 gle dohc non turbo station wagon. we have had the car for over 4 years now and its got over 212k on the original engine. it works just fine except for our oil pan gasket died some time ago. we can drive the car for about 45 minutes till we need to put more oil in. we have the replacement gasket. i am just wondering what the steering yoke looks like so when i goto do the work with the engine crane, i know what the hell the "yoke" looks like and how to take it off. if any one can help me, it would be mutch appreciated. i know i cant spell vary good right now. anyway, thats what the volvo manual said i had to remove in order to lift the engine slightly to get to the oil pan. the rest i know how to do. thanks a mill if anyone can help

Hmmm...I don't think the clearance on your16v engine are that much different than the 8 valve models. On them, all you do is loosen the passenger side engine mount and jack the motor up. Be sure to use a block of wood so you don't bend anything. If you have access to a hoist or can build a support to use a come-along to winch it up it makes things much easier. If fo some reason one does have to loosen the steering yoke, the couplers are down where it attaches to the cross member. There is a pinch bolt you loosen and then it will slide.
If you're losing enough oil in 45 minutes that the oil light comes on or the engine begins rattling, you have more to contend with than an oil pan gasket. OP gaskets drip, not pour. I've installed a pan w/ no gasket and not had the severity of oil loss you describe.

Difficult to change out rear main oil seal/gaskets on 1994 940 non( turbo) station wagon?

In general, the answer is yes. I have not changed one in quite a while but almost always you have to lift the engine to get the oil pan off. You need the oil pan off to loosen the main bearing caps.

1990 volvo 740 wagon shuts off while driving

sounds like you have a computer glitch. i would take it to any auto shop and pay 50 bucks so they can take a look at your e.c.u. (engine control unit) we had a similar problem a few years ago with our 1990 volvo 740 gle 2.3l station wagon. it was a glitch with the computer. got a mixed signal with the mass air flow sensor.

Smokin Car

I had a 87 740 turbo wagon, It ran a 10.9 1/4 mile man was it fun. I hate to say that your turbo is nearing the end of its life. The only thing you can do is replace it. there are speciality shops that specilize in turbos. if you can't find one close check out a Diesel truck shop, they deal in turbos too. maybe you can have it rebuilt a little cheaper, or I can tell you how make it pass a Corvette. Good luck.
