ON A HOT DAY THE CAR WILL NOT CRANK. WE THINK IT HAS TO DO WITH THE GREEN COLOR KEY LIGHT ON THE DASH, IT WILL NOT CRANK IF THE GREEN KEY LIGHT DOES NOT LIGHT UP.

If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also check for fuel injector pulse.
What lights, are you talking about dash lights? If so, some of those items may not go hot until you turn on the key. Then I would check ignition switch and wiring. I haven't looked at your wiring diagrams. I would think the horn circuit would be hot all the time.
Generally speaking, you have a chip in the key that is read by the security system. If the system does not "see" the right chip, the system locks out the ignition and fuel systems. The new key probably does not have a chip or the wrong chip.
sounds like a bad starter or bad wire from the starter. When it gets hot it fails. Look at all wire to and from the starter, and have the selinoid on starter checked.I think that's where the problem lies. Let me know how you make out Starters can cause this
I believe your starter is shorting this happened to me and we melted jumper cables then the battery went dead real fast. We replaced the starter and all well
Make sure battery has a full charge and battery connections all good. Voltage and ground are both important. You could use a test light on the fuses in the fuse box to check for voltage. Some fuses are hot all the time, some go hot with the key on.
You may have to check feed to and from ignition switch.
You need to jump the neutral safety switch there was a plug you disconnected in front of the shifter it has either 4 or 6 pins, take the plug you pulled out cut it off of the old gear selector and plug it back in and strip the wires back, the wires are color coded so like colors usually go together. with a 12 volt test light ground the clip to a proper ground, turn the key to the start position hold on start and check for voltage at the wires you previously stripped, let go of key and voltage should stop if voltage is constant you may be on the reverse light circuit, keep looking for voltage that goes on only when key turned to start, when you find it look for the corresponding color ie green /white to green/ black etc, wire the 2 together and starter should crank over, if not try another one. you will also need to wire the reverse light switch from the new trans to this connector. stay away from brown wires as they are grounds on bmw and never hook anything but brown to brown unless you are 100 percent certain it hooks up that way
