2000 Audi A6 2.8l Coolant Temp. gauge not working.

I just recently purchased a 2000 A6 2.8l and realized my temperature gauge hasn't moved.
The car just hit 100k.
If it is a sensor or switch - how easily can I replace this without shelling out a boat load to the dealership?

Yes. Got the same problem. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

Changing the engine sensor is easy when engine is cold and make sure you refill with antifreeze ,Buy sensor first so you know what to look for its not expensive from a motor factor .i honestly cant remember ever changing one on this model but it must be around the head area somewhere

The problem is not with the sending sensor which is located in the coolant return hose from the radiator to the engine. The problem is somewhere in the instrument cluster, most likely a failing resistor on the circuit board. When the temperature is cold the temp guage will work normally, but soon drops back to no reading.

Dont discount offhand what i said here ,use a multimeter to check the resistance of the sender when hot and then when cold before you start playing with dash head units ,this is mega money and it may be cheaper to change the car

Broken temp gauge 2000 4.2V6 f150 were Is THE sending unit

Does your vehicle have a hard start first start up in the morning ? Does the vehicle shift properly ? Is the check engine light lit.?
I would not think the sending unit was bad if your not experiencing any of these type problems , I would think the gauge was bad ! You need to know how this works , the coolant temp. sensor is an input to the PCM - engine computer . The PCM use this info for more then just setting the gauge to the proper temp. It is used for proper shift points , how much fuel the PCM supplies to the engine etc.
Engine coolant temperature information is received by the instrument cluster from the PCM over the SCP network. Temperatures over 121°C (275°F) will display hot (H). If the engine coolant temperature data is missing or invalid for five seconds, the instrument cluster will move the engine coolant temperature gauge below the cold (C) position.
The SCP - a serial data communication network !

What is wrong the temp does not get hot going down rasd

I would buy a new thermostat and flush the radiator coolant. Dexcool (The orange coolant) is known to clog up the internals including the temperature sensor in cars of your age.

While you are at it, I would strongly consider changing radiator hoses and clamps unless that was done recently.

If you are referring to the dashboard temperature gauge not moving...It means that your temperature sending unit may be faulty (or it's not plugged in). Dexcool is known to clog up the internals including the temperature sensor in cars of your age. Inspect the connector to the temp gauge for damage and replace the temp gauge.
A replacement temp sensor is about $15 at any auto parts store.

Good luck

Temp gauge not moving heater blowing cold air when driving heats up a little

have you checked the coolant level in the system. if its low it will do this.also you may have a bad thermostat that needs replacing as it could be stuck open not allowing the coolant to get to operating temp. these can cause the symptons your having.

Engine coolant Temperature gauge fluctuates

Watch the temp gauge when the electric radiator fans come on. The temp sensor that controls when the fan comes on may be faulty.

I have a 2004 Audi A6 s-line w/101k it recently started climbing from the normal temp to one notch past on the coolant gauge. It doesnt peak out yet and hasnt gone past the first notch after normal an

Sound like either the Thermometer Housing, Thermometer or water pump may be in trouble.

If no leaks you can rule out the Thermometer Housing.
But regardless you will need to replace all three if any one is bad.
And the timing Belt while you are in there,
Only because it a 5 hour Minimum Labor job to replace either of them.
And there all right near one another,

A real pain to get to those. Thank you Audi...

Hello, I have a 1995 Audi 80 V6 that keeps overheating. As a cheap temporary solution my mechanic bypassed the aircon which seemed to work at the beginning but the problem has returned. There seems to be...

Low engine coolant can keep temperature sensors from working correctly. Air or combution gasses being forced into the cooling system from a blown head gasket or cracked head can cause the same symptoms.

If you want to know if the temperature sensor is working, you must first be certain that the rest of the cooling system is working and only then can you determine if the sensor is "lying" to you. The actual engine temperature should be checked with an infrared thermometer and compared to the temperature sensor data in the onboard computer.

There is a coolant temperature sensor for the computer and there is a separate coolant temperature sending unit for the gauge. Comparing the two and verifying with an infrared thermometer is the best way to figure out what is going on.

The temperature guage on my 2000 Nissan Altima has quit working. Would it be the engine coolant sending unit?

Locate the temp switch in the engine bay, if its a single wire just earth it and see if your gauge moves. If it does then get a new switch.

1995 Audi 90: No heat!

I had that same problem on a 1990 audi 90.

Turns out the radiator was leaking, so the coolant kept running out causing the temp light to go on. as a temporary fix, you can keep topping up the coolant, but otherwise you are going to need to get that radiator fixed. by the way, audi 90s have TWO radiators; in my case it was the smaller radiator that had gone.

new radiator later, and it was fixed. unfortunatley, my temp gauge has never work...
