My 2006 Forenza will only go into 3rd and 4th gear and the stick shift itself is very loose. Anyone know what might be the cause and what the solution is? If this is going to be expensive I just might blow the damned thing up. This year alone I've already put $2000 worth of repairs into it...

sounds like the shifter linkage has worn and not working properly need to lift in air and inspect the linkage

You may want to check the gear lock mechanism. This is the one that prevents you from moving from park when you accidentally hit the lever. If that checks out ok, you may want to inspect the linkages of the shifter to the transmission.

Was your issue the range selector switch (a.k.a. range sensor, prindle switch, park/neutral safety switch). Part # 37720-86z01?
It is located on the outside of the transmission on the front side (not between the transmission and the firewall). You can open the hood and put an eye on it.
Be VERY sure to alignment it properly AND to clear the code.
If this helps, please say so!

I've experienced this on a Volvo and it was the linkage bushings. Stiffened it up nice!
