Buick Century leaking anti freeze, trying to overheat, poor accleration, stutter at steady speed, dash lights all on

My 2001 Buick Century Custom has recently wanted to get up half way and above at times on the temp gauge. Every few days I have to put anti freeze or water into the radiator and overflow. Noticeable leak coming from under the car(front driver side area)Radiator hose seems as if its been expanding. More problematic with temp at idle. Also when driving at a steady speed, there is a noticeable stutter periodically. Progressively getting worse, the car isnt picking up speed like it used too. At this point its noticeable but drivable. Also curious that on the computer it runs no codes. All my dash lights have been on since I bought the car 4 years ago. Since then, the mileage area would work off and on and no longer works at all. The door/trunk light came on and periodically when you push the mirror/interior light it will turn that particular dash light off and on..Hmmm All in the meanwhile my interior lights no longer work. Primary concern is leak, stutter, and acceleration issues and Dash/Interior lights secondary.

I have considered changing out the thermostat, radiator hose, water pump and having the radiator flushed. Havent thought about looking to see if the system is circulating. Id like to do all the above but not sure it necessary. Unsure if the stutter and slow acceleration could be the catalac converter and if its corroded could it cause the radiator system to act as such?

SOURCE: Radiator Electric Fan Motor on a 2003 Buick Century won't come on when temp gets high

I have a 1997 Buick Century with the same problem. Both my fans work if the A/C is
on as they should. If your turn off the A/C the passanger side fan will not come on
and at an idle the coolant in the radiator will boil, you can hear it in the overflow tank.
If you are driving there is enough air flow thru the radiator that the coolant doesn't
boil and the car doesn't overheat. I have replace the water pump, the thermostat.
and the ETS or engine temperature sensor mounted just above the thermostat in
the thernostat housing, to no avail, I still have the same problem. The only other
thing is the coolant level sensor in the radiator, which I haven't replace yet due
to the fact you have to pull the radiator in order to replace it, which is a major
undertaking. I have a low coolant indicator on all the time on the dash so I have
a pretty good idea the coolanat level sensor is bad. The coolant level is not low
so that sensor is not working as it should. I hope this may help with your problem.
To test you fan raise the hood when it is cold and top off the radiator and fill the
overflow tank to the cold mark. Start the car and let it idle with the A/C off and
see if the drivers side fans comes on. It will have to get to operating temp
before the fan will come on. If it doesn't come on replace the radiator low coolant
sensor on the passanger side of the radiator. If that doesn't fix the problem
replace the thermostat and the Engine Temperature Sensor at the thermostat
housing with an A/C Delco Engine Temperature Sensor. Good Luck..

SOURCE: 1994 Century Buick Heating problem

It sound like you have a block or plug up heater. If you just used a garden hose that is not a flush .A reel flush is called a power flush it used about 150lb. of air&water mix. Find a Radiator shop to do this. as far as your temp. going up and down you may have an air trap in eng,an radiator run car for 20min without the cap on. I have been doing Radiator work over 34 years

SOURCE: Have a leak under passenger side dash when it rains. I think the door under the cabin air filter isnt closing is it an easy fix

Having just repaired this problem in a 1998 Buick Regal, I can tell you that fixing the water leak is actually quite easy. It took me quite a while to track down the source of water, but I have discovered that it comes through the cabin air filter. There is a seal on the passenger side of the cowl (A two piece unit, black plastic, against the windshield) that seals it to the windshield to prevent water infiltration. It is very small and somewhat hard to miss. I took the cowl off to change the filter when I discovered this.

You can make a diverter to go over the air filter under the cowl, or even easier is to use some clear RTV silicone (avalible at any automotive and most hardware stores) and put a good bead on the old seal. When you re-install the plastic cowl, be carefull where it goes against the windshield to make sure you don't "smear" the silicone. After you re-install the plastic retainer hardware, smooth out the bead and clean up the excess silicone(a wet finger and some old cardboard works great). Let it dry and clean up the water in the passenger compartment.

Cleaning up the water is the hard part. Removing the plastic trim around the door (if you grasp the trip peices firmly they just pull up off some metal clips, but they can be quite stubborn) you will notice the carpet just pulls up. At the bottom front corner of the front doors the carpet has a plastic hook that is around one of the trim clips. Lift it off that and the rest of the carpet towards the firewall just pulls up. If it has been a long problem, your carpet may be moldy. Also, the carpet edges and some of the more hidden panel clips are very sharp and may cut you while you are poking around, so be carefull.

Since the water entered through the air filter and right over the fan, you will at minimum want to replace the filter. I had mold and moss growing on mine. My fan also squeels and chirps now, so I know it got wet. Not much to do about that but replace it or carefully lubricate the motor.

In your question you mentioned a door underneath the filter not closing. On my '98 Buick Regal there is no door or valve of any sort. The filter sits right above the fan blades. It is the cowel's job to prevent water from entering this part of the vehicle. I hope this helps you fix your problem.

This is a common issue with Buick Century/Regal between the years 1997-2004. There are some resistors on the cluster circuit board that have corroded and lose their solder connection. This can be repaired at a reasonable price. Just look for a gauge repair service on the web that can perform this repair. Good luck. Ron @ Speed-O-Repair.

have they checked the PCM/ECM fuses? some might be bad or the computer itself. does the car run poorly, bad fuel economy? you could go the the emission check place to have it checked. for alot less money it will tell you if it is computer related before spending more for a mechanic to analyse it .$15 in WA State.

My `95 Buick Century V-6 overheating. I found the problem to be a leaking freeze plug on the front head, behind the water pump. How can I get at this plug to replace it?

There are many radiator leak stop products that will seal the leak without having to replace the freeze plug. It is the poor mans repair.

2000 Buick century custom only has heat when you accelerate fast but puts out cold air when you accelerate normally or at a steady speed.

Check your coolant level. Not enough fluid in the radiator to circulate when the engine is operating normally.
