My 2001 Beetle stalls when I stop at a red light, won't idle

My Beetle was running just fine and now suddenly when I stopped at a stop sign it just stalls. The lights stay on and the battery light comes on. I have to put it in park and start it up again. As long as it's running and not left to idle it's fine, but mainly it won't idle. The rpm needle is jumping up and down. I've noticed the rpm needle jumping from time to time but nothing as far as stalling like it just did.

SOURCE: 2004 new beetle won't start in the am without

Hi, seems to me it's time for a new battery, probably the original battery in the car and 72 -78 months is a good useful life, however you can pull in to a place like auto zone ( I suggest at a time when they are not that busy, early a.m. ) and they will do a diagnostic check for free and check out the charging system , battery , and any drainage of current when everything is off for you but I'm sure it will be ok or it would not crank all day but the long over nite hours drains what little voltage that is in the battery. A battery that is bad will not fully charge because of a bad cell inside of it. Good luck, hope a battery fixes you up!!

Don't stop at red lights and stop signs...

How many miles are on the engine? When was your last tune up? If it's been a while then I would start by changing the fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve, oil change, etc.

Either your power brake assist booster has a bad check valve in it causing a huge vacuum leak when you step on the brake (Vacuum leaks lean out the fuel/air mixture causing stalling) or you have an 'engine protect' sensor that kills the ignition/fuel pump when the oil level's too low and it's either got crud in it from running the oil too low or has otherwise malfunctioned.

My 2001 Hyundai Accent 1.5 L, stalls out at stop signs and red lights. No codes are present, and check engine light does not come on, any ideas? Fuel pump?

See if your idle air control valve needs to be cleaned out. This is a common problem in cars that stall out a lot.

Engine stalls at stop lights and stop signs

check the fuel regulator, while running unplug the red vacumn hose and if gas squirts out the hole, then it is bad,if not then possibly plugged catalytic converters, drive it on the highway if you can, and stop and look underneath at it and if it looks red, then replace them.Check to see if its overheating, usually a really hot hood tells the story.

Engine stalls at stop lights and stop signs

sounds like the torque converter lock up might not be disengaging. You might also want to check for engine vacuum leaks. Does engine idle smoothly when in park or nuetral ? if the idle is good I would suspect torque converter problem.
