Powersteering, radio, windows

Is the transmission range sensor the same thing as the neutral safety swith, if so this was replaced, and the problem persists. not as bad as previously. is there another solution to losing all three in reverse.

  • rlpnorwalk Feb 14, 2009

My previous problem was a problem with powersteering, radio and powerwindows cutting in and out. Usually starting as soon as the car is put into reverse. Recently I replaced the neutral safety switch. I no longer have a problem with the windows, but the other two still show up occasionally.

1997 Mercury Sable
After starting and shifting the auto trans into drive the Radio goes off immediately.
After 15 to 20 minutes of driving there is a clicking from what appears to be a relay near the the steering column or in the vicinity of the drivers "kick-panel".
The power windows fail, the control console for the windows quits illuminating, Power steering works on an intermittent basis, Also the rear defrost switch on the dash panel will not engage or function.
Otherwise the car runs exceptionally well!
The engine never quits (Which I have been expecting any moment).
The RPM Gage stays at the correct level with proper idling.
Any Ideas?
I am thinking the "Neutral Safety Switch".
(How difficult and how do you replace this part?
I am somewhat mechanically inclined, but prefer some input before I do anything).

If any mechanic agrees or has suggestions thanks in advance for your help!

Transmission Range Sensor and Neutral Safety Switch are the same thing. As for the other question, I'm not sure what you're asking.

Trying to find Neutral Safety Switch Transmission Range Sensor 2007 Mercury Milan V6 3.0L Engine

If I remember right, it is under the shift lever right on top of the trans. You have to remove the cable and take the nut off of the shift lever to access the switch.

Where is the neutral safty swith on a 2006 ford focus

There isnt a neutral safety switch. There is a manual lever position sensor(MLP). It combines all the fuctions of backup lights, neutral safety, and informing the PCM what gear you have selected into one unit. Follow the shift cable out to the transmission, and at the end, Follow the shift cable out to the transmission, and at the end, you will find the MLP.

How can i fix my mazda 626 transmission range

The transmission range sensor aka neutral safety switch is located underneath the air filter on top of the transaxle and very easy to access. Replace this part (around $50) and it will solve your problem.
What happens is this, when your tranny warms up, it disperses heat to the sensor switch and if its faulty or worn out, will send faulty relays to the transmissiom computer module (TCM) and makes the transmission shift irratically (OD to 3rd and back while driving at freeway speeds). You tranny is not overheating like most people believe, its the switch. Mechanics are telling alot of people that their tranny needs replaced. Watch Out For These People!! They only want your money!!

I want to know if the transmission range sensor is the same thing as the transmission speed sensor. I am having trouble with my car it wont start. we recently put a different motor in it from a 96 crown...

The switch has to be adjusted with the car in the neutral position, on the switch there are line up marks. Once the lines are in the same position tighten the bolts and then try to start in the park and neutral positions.

Powersteering, radio, windows won't work

Hello and thanks for using FixYa!, the problem with your sable is that the transmission range sensor needs to be replaced, back in 1996 and 1997, the circuitry internal to the sensor caused an interference with several other systems in the car, including the radio, power steering and power windows. Have the sensor replaced and it will need to be adjusted, so it is best done by a ford dealer who would have the proper alignment tool.
