Pulled radio to get serial # and now I can't get the radio to go into code input mode. it just says "safe" and the icon for pause is on

Gamma model radio. I had gotten it into code input mode previous so I could try code 1111. i have waited more than an hour between attempts. I am wondering if i should just disconnect the battery for a while.

If you've entered a bad code a couple times, you need to wait an hour while the radio and ignition are on. Then, turn on the radio, SAFE should be displayed. Then Press the FM1 button and hold it down, then while holding down the FM1 button, press and hold the AM buttons so that both buttons are held down simultaneously. Release the buttons. Now enter the correct code using the radio pre-set station buttons (one through 4). Button 1 changes the first digit in the code "1"000, Button "two" changes the second digit in the code 1"0" "three" 00, button changes the third digit, button 4 changes the last digit in the code. In most cases the first digit is a 1 and won't need to be changed. You push each pre-set station button multiple times to step through the digits (1-9) to get the correct code displayed.
Code 1246 would entered by pushing button "2" two times, pushing button 3 four times, and pushing button 4, six times.

After entering the correct security code, push and hold down the FM1 and AM button simultaneously as before until SAFE is displayed, then release the 2 buttons, and now the radio should now work.

If you don't want to spend the 135, find out the name of the dealer who origonally sold the car when new. They should have the code on file form the pre inspection that they did. It is a myth that there is a code inside the trunk or on the radio, so don't waste your time looking.

SOURCE: Radio on 2002 audi TT not working

It is highly likely that the radio will have lost its security code whilst being disconnected from its power supply (your battery).

Any local dealer will re enter your code for you for a small charge unless you have the code stored in your radio user guide in which case you can re-enter the code yourself.

SOURCE: radio reset code for 1998 a4 audi

I had the exact same problem on my 1998 Audi A4 Quattro Sedan I just purchased. I read a couple of other posts that said to try looking for the radio code in the spare tire compartment in the trunk. Sure enough on the right hand side of the compartment was a information label and on it someone had written the code 1174 in pen. I then left the key in the ignition and the radio on for an hour. Then I pushed the DX and FM1/2 button and the same time until the "1000" number appeared on the display. Then I pushed in the code 1174 using the 1 - 4 tuner buttons. For example the number 1 key I pushed until the number 1 appeared. Then pushed button number 2 until the number 1 appeared, pushed button 3 until the number 7 appeared and button 4 until number 4 appeared. After I had the code 1174 on the display, you again push the DX and FM1/2 button at the same time and the radio unlocked and worked perfectly. I hope that this helps. I have the Delta (Bose) AM/FM Cassette radio in my car. Good Luck!!

Safe mode car radio

To unlock your VW factory radio from "SAFE" mode, you will need to enter the radio code. Typically, the code is written on a radio card included with the documentation for the vehicle when the car is first sold.

If you don't have the code, or have lost it, you can retrieve it by visiting your VW dealer. You will need the car's VIN number and the serial number of the radio (located on the body of the radio).

The procedure to enter the code is as follows:

Press the "MODE" and "SCAN" buttons simultaneously and hold them until "1000" appears on the radio display. Release the buttons as soon as this number appears.

Refer to your Radio Card and use the station preset buttons ("1", "2", "3" and "4") to input the code. Press the "1" button repeatedly to input the first digit, the "2" button to input the second digit, etc.

Press and hold the "MODE" and "SCAN" buttons simultaneously until "SAFE" appears again. Release, and the radio should be unlocked.

Do not enter the wrong code more than three times, or the radio will lock itself. Note the dealer can also enter the code for you (they may charge a small fee).

I have a 99 a6 quattro i have the code for the radio but when i press rbds and pscan buttons nothing happens it is in safe mode and wont let me do the steps to get out of it!

First of all be sure that your four digit security radio code is correct. If you had attempted three times without success to exit from safe mode by inserting the code, radio is blocked in safe mode for a while. Now turn ON the radio (in safe mode), and let it turned ON for one hour, then follow this procedure.
The sequence of VW radio gamma programming is:
1. Push simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed.
2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDS" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt.

For example: we have the security code "5079". Then:
3. By the no.# 1 key you will set up the first safe code digit. Push 5 times on the no.# 1 button. The "5" number will be setted.
4. By the no.# 2 key you will set up the second safe code digit. Push 10 times on the no.# 2 button. The "0" number will be setted.
5. By the no.# 3 key you will set up the third safe code digit. Push 7 times on the no.# 3 button. The "7" number will be setted.
6. By the no.# 4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit. Push 9 times on the no.# 4 button. The "9" number will be setted.
7. Then push again simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys for confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed.

The radio is now ready for use!

In my 200 vw beetle tdi, the radio will not turn on. the fuse is good for the radio, so what else should i try

You need to remove the radio out from the dashboard using special removal VW radio Gamma keys. In the rear face of the unit is placed a fuse (red color) = 10 Amp. Replace blown fuse with a new one. Then you will need to exit the radio out from the security "SAFE" mode.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must have the security anti-theft code for your VW radio from the car manufacturer, or from an Volkswagen dealer!

Cant switch on radio - says: ''code 1''

The radio alarm has been tripped. Any loss of power to the system will cause this to happen. It wants you to input the 4 digit code to reset the radio. If you do not have it, you can pull the stereo and get the serial numbers, and ask the VW dealer for the code. It should be free info if you supply the serial numbers.
With the power on and SAFE showing on the display, press and hold the MODE and SCAN button together until SAFE changes to 1000. Release the buttons and using the first four station buttons enter the radio code.
Use button #1 to change the 1 to the correct code, pressing once will change to 2 twice to 3 etc
Use button number 2 to change the next number etc.

When you have entered the correct code; press and hold the SCAN and MODE buttons together until code disappears and radio comes on.
I hope this may help.
Good Luck!

Radio blocked

Blocked? I am guessing that it has something on the display, like"SAFE"? If there is power going to it, and signs of some life...it could be the car's radio alarm. When battery power is lost to the radio, it will trip an alarm. It requires a 4 digit code to work again.
If you have the owner's manual, you can find it in there. If not...
If you pull the radio, DO NOT disconnect any wires, and find the serial number on it, you can call a dealer and get the code for the radio.
Some cars hold down MODE and SCAN and the SAFE should change to 1000. This is where you input the numbers using the up and down to change number value & the first four station buttons to change to next number.
Good Luck.

Radio in safe mode

OK do you have the radio in your hands? IF not you have to remove it using the special tools slotted to unlock it and pull it out. The radio serial is etched into it but you have to remove it to see. With this and the car's serial and proof of ownership VW can get the radio code for you. Or they'd be happy to remove it for you as well and get the other info themselves.
