I have changed plugs and wires distribtor , checked fuel pressure, checked timing changed coil I have also tried swaping the ' smec' with little change (this was a used unit ) I have tried retriving the trouble codes but they are so general they do me little good . any wild ideas?

From Lusty Kid:
I know the economy is bad, but change all of the plugs. Check your PCV Valve hose, 150 rottens them out allowing air to be sucked in, thus all kinds of codes.
Depending on mileage. Dismount the EGR valve and clean passages. If you are really good dismount the throtle position sensor body and clean out passages with Choke Cleaner., dismount where the EGR valves connects to the engine, clean out passages. Also check the hose thats behind this mounting to ensure is not clogged. If clogged clean it out. If not replace it. Is about 1.5 ft. long, connects to the PCV Valve Hose.
When is the last time you change your harness. Can't remember??? Replace it. Good Luck

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator. Could also be that the timing jumped. But I'm leaning towards the pressure regulator. Hope that I could help. Best wishes.
SOURCE: p0301 trouble code
The misfire is detected by the misfire monitor as a slight change in
engine speed which the PCM calculates back to a particular cylinder.
The monitor is active continuously, but associates problems into 3
types. Two of the types are monitored on successive trips. The first
trip the monitor detects a misfire it sets a pending code but not the
MIL light. If on the second trip the same problem occurs the DTC code
is set as current problem and sets the MIL light on. The MIL will stay
on untill the DTC is deleted. The remaining type is a most sever case
and signals the possibility of cat damage. In this case the misfire
monitor identifies the problem and the PCM determines it to be severe
and immediately sets the DTC as current and the MIL light to flash at a
rate of 1 per second until the condition is no longer present, at which
time the MIL stays on steady.
So once the P0301 is set it never turns off, except by code deletion procedure.
I think a lean burn condition could cause a misfire, but probably not
from a PCV problem which should affect all cylinders equally. There
would likely need to be another problem with that cylinder or intake or
...... .

IF YOU GOT CYLINDER MISFIRE.OR OPEN FUEL INJECTOR.THAT WILL CAUSE THE PCM TO ENRICHEN FUEL MIXTURE.TO ADJUST TO DEAD CYLINDER.WHICH ACT AS A LARGE VACUUM LEAK.THATS WHY YOUR EXHAUST TAIL PIPES HAS A RAW FUEL SMELL AND WHITE SMOKES.

Do you know if the plugs were changed, a bad or broken plug will also cause rough idle and slow acceleration?
