My 2003 cts just clicks when I try to start, I put in new battery and starter

It might be that the starter has gone bad.

Battery voltage is definitely and issue. Charge your battery and have it tested before condemning the starter.

New battery is great, but only if it has 12.+ volts to start with. The test below will mean nothing without a fully charged good battery.

Try this:

Turn on the headlights, try to start the car. If the lights go out completely after you hear a click, it usually is the battery terminals needing to be really cleaned & tightly installed with a coat of grease on them to seal.

If the lights go dim, that indicates either not enough power in the battery, or a bad starter/solenoid.

I always wonder when a battery is new, what was wrong that made you replace it. That is the kind of info I would ask for if you brought your car to me for repairs. The answer sometimes leads to the problem. Please provide that info if you need to inquire again as it will assist in the troubleshooting process.

The clicking is the solenoid you hear. Either you have a loose connection at the solenoid or a bad solenoid.

does the vehicle have an anti theft device on it if so it may need to be reset. usually all you have to do is unlpug the negative batt cable. for about 5 mins.and reconnect it. if this does not solve the problem look i the owners manual to see how to override the system.

hi, when it dont turn over do you hear a clicking noise or is the engine turning over and just not starting.
If its the first and when you turn the key the starter motor dont turn the engine over allowing it to start you will usually hear a clicking noise and this is the selanoid inside the starter motor failing to make a connection.
If this is the case then all you need to do is get the starter motor replaced if you have any further comments or need further assistance then let me know ok

Sorry to say, but you have a bad starter. One way to check is to have someone tap on the starter with a hammer while you try to start it, if the starter starts to turn, then it's your starter...or have someone removed it and then take it to a local auto parts store and have them check it....Chances are you have a bad starter.

i had a 2003 ctc that did the same thing, it wouldn't start or would make a clicking sound and about 1 mth after the problem started aND mechanics could not find a problem my car caught on fire and burned completely from something under the right side of the hood. i had just parked the car and got out, it happened really fast. the fire chief said the cause was unknown????

now i have a 2004 cts and i'm having the same problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! has anyone else had this happen???? please be cautious if your cts is doing this, during the fire my doors locked and had to be pried into by fire chief.

You may have a bad throttle body.
