It's actually an option called the twilight sentinel. There is a photosensor in the dash that sees how dark it is out and turns on the lights for you without you ever having to touch that knob on the left.
The fact that the lights stay on after you shut the car off only when it is dark is again, a safety feature, not a defect. They are on a timer that is adjustable by the slider on the bottom part of the headlight switch.
All of this is explained in the owner's manual, and most new cars with keyless entry are this way, at least from GM.

Been working on the same issue for a week. fixed it last night after research and trouble shooting. The head lights are controlled by the head light dial/knob on your dash on the left side of your steering wheel. With the knob pushed in, if you shut down your car, the lights should automatically shut off as well. Mine didnt so what I did was i turned off my car, disconnected the positive battery terminal located inside a fist sized red box on the right side of your engine. Then I took off the dash panels to get to the actual connection on the headlight switch/dial/knob. I disconnected it and put it all back together. It fixed the problem. It worked for me, maybe theres an easier or faster way of fixing it but this worked. Good luck.

Also, with the knob pushed in, after shutting down car and opening and closing the door, they should definitely shut off. While the engine is running and while in park, the dimming tab that slides left and right (under the knob/dial/switch) controls whether you want the headlights on or off if the knob is pushed in. Making it go all the way to the left controlls this. If you slide it left slowly, you will notice that when you reach the end there will be some resistance. If you continue pushing, the lights turn on or off. If you have the lights off, as soon as you put the vehicle from park to drive, the lights automatically turn on no matter what. If your engine is running and youre in park, pulling the knob all the way out turns the headlights on no matter what and they wont shut off until you shut down the engine and wait for about ten minutes. There is also a setting right in between the knob being in and all the way out. Just experiment and youll get it. Trust me, I was confused whe I first got my Riv. Hope this helps someone.

2004 Outlander Headlight Delay Program

To program the length of delay for the headlights of a 2004 Outlander, turn the headlight switch off and make sure it is in the Auto position. Then wait for the desired amount of time you want the headlights to stay on before turning the switch back to OFF. The maximum delay you can set is three minutes. For more information, please refer to your car's manual or contact a certified mechanic. REFERENCES:

When I turn off my car, the headlights stay on even after I use my fob to lock the doors. Normally they go off right away. I have found that hitting my headlight switch two times after I turn off my car,...

This is the delay feature of your vehicle.
Your car's Auto Headlight functionality offers both convenience and safety. The exit delay programmed in means that the lights will stay on after you turn off the engine for a set period of time. You can change how long they stay on to fit your needs. Here's how to do that:
  1. Make sure the headlight switch is in the Auto position.
  2. Make sure the key is set to OFF.
  3. Turn the headlight switch off.
  4. Turn the switch back to ON, then OFF again.
  5. Turn the switch back to the Auto position.
  6. Make sure the lights come on.
  7. Wait for the amount of time you want the headlights to stay on, then turn the switch back to OFF once more.
  8. The headlight delay should now be programmed.
Tips
  • The maximum delay you can set is three minutes.
  • You can set the system to have no delay by not waiting to turn the switch back to OFF the final time.

My 2000 Toyota Corolla's low beam headlights turn on during the day and off during the night. I have changed some of the fuses in the fuse box. I'm not sure what to try next.

assuming the 2000 is same as 2001-2002, the headlight system runs upon firing engine and they stay on... doesn't make sense , if headlights work during day light and don't during night time, check your light switch , move it around , wiggle etc.. if no diff. , check head light sensor and did you know there are like 3 or 4 diff. fuse box's , there is one in the dash!!!, driver side i believce , good luck

If staying on too long on that model lights are controlled by gem module and there is no time adjustment need to be diagnosed professionally to see if problem is in the switch or module

Why won't headlights stay on after you turn off the engine?

Do you have DIC? (Driver Information Center). If you have controls on the steering wheel you can change the program to keep the headlights and the interior lights on. Maybe you can borrow an operators manual if you don,t have one. Simple procedure. Keep us posted, good luck.

Headlights stay on too long after turning off ignition

This is a feature for safety. If you turn off headlights before the engine, they go out immediately.
If you leave lights on when turning engine off, then turn off headlights, they stay on for approx 30 - 40 seconds, to allow one to walk to the door etc, with illumination on.

If you mean several mins, then time it to check consistancy. If consistant, may be a program issue, if not consistant, maybe a relay issue.

Car will start lights, radio, etc, but engine

Try this:

Turn ON headlights and try to crank...

1. Headlights turn off completely means that the battery terminals need cleaning. Remove cables and clean clamps and posts.
2. Headlights have a noticable dimming means that the starter needs to be replaced.
3. No change in brightness. The headlights stay on, meand the starter solenoid needs replacing.
