You have a bad lifter if left unattended its starts by" ticking" then "tapping" then eventually ceases up!! The fix..... Have a compression test done on each cylinder and pull valve cover off and replace ticking lifter or u might just get lucky and adjust it... Until then ..... A heavier weight oil will quiet it down...Not a fix tho......

SOURCE: i have a ticking noise coming from rear driver side of 2003 aviat

Most likely its the exhaust pipes or muffler making the sound. It should just be the metal expanding from the heat.

If you crawl under the car you should be able to hear the part better.

Hey Tim , whether an engine "knocks" or "ticks" is a BIG difference!! Valves usually tick. Rods and bearings knock,,, I would consult a qualified professional and get their opinion..make sure you have PLENTY of oil...

Loud ticking noise when first staring, engine stalls sometimes when starting it unless I hold the gas pedal down

The TPS would be what I would do had that problem once myself solved the problem. as for the ticking noise sounds like a lifter is bleeding down as long as the noise goes away you will be ok. But may I suggest that if you are going to keep the vehicle for awhile longer you might want to have a set of lifters put in it.

Pound ticking noise when my 99 durango starts goes away after the engine warms up

The ticking noise could be a faulty hydrulic valve lifter. When last was the oil & filter changed, it coul be that the oil is thick and not going through to the lifters and when it warms up the oil is thin. It could be that the engine is need of an overhaul as 148.000 miles is 238.182 Kilometers and that is a hi milage.

Clunking/ticking noise during acceleration in 3rd and 4th gears

This sounds on the base of it to be pre ignition, if so the moment you take the foot off the gas it goes? The cure is to retard the ignition timing slightly, have you recently changed your octane of fuel? this will also cause this?
The noise is caused by the expansion of the compressed gases expanding before the piston reaches top dead centre causing the piston to \'rattle\' left unchecked will cause permanent damage and engine failure

Ticking/Tapping when car starts but goes away???

I had what sounds like the exact same problem. It was an exhaust leak from the left (driver's) side exhaust manifold. This engine has a history of the manifold bolts breaking and causing the exhaust leak. The engine is also used on some Dodge vehicles. It sounds like a tick and I almost mistook it for a bad lifter. I took it to the local Jeep dealer who confirmed the exhaust leak. I replaced the left manifold completely and replaced bolts/gaskets on both sides (left/right) and it fixed the problem. Be careful, as the dealer tried to gouge me on the price. You are looking in the ball park of $600 parts/labor. I got parts for $120 and it took the better part of a work day to do the job.

Ticking Noise at Startup

Possibly a leaking hydraulic lifter. They can leak down while engine isn't running and then make a ticking noise for a while on startup. If it takes 10-15 minutes to go away, it is more likely to be a loose tappet which needs adjusting.

The sound you are hearing is an exhaust leak. Sounds like a ticking noise, goes away when driving, but can be heard when sitting. You probably have a bad manifold gasket, or loose clamp or broken weld on exhaust. Best way to tell is start it up and listen as to find leak. Or take to a muffler shop and have them repair it.
