The engine cut out while I was driving home last week. It was storming, but I made it into town, only to lose power upon driving through a snow drift that didn't seem that high. I am sure a fair amount of snow made it into the engine compartment. I can start the car and it idles very rough and tended not to rev, but shakes more if gas was given. I have replaced all four sparkplugs and the fuel filter. Since then it does pretty much the same thing except it can rev up a bit and the regular idle does eventually sound smoother, though once that happens it cuts out. I can keep it going with a little gas but if I back off or put it in gear it dies again. I was fairly sure it was the fuel lines or something like that, and have added injector cleaner and gasline antifreeze. The temperature here has been hovering around freezing since then so I haven't had the benefit of a warm day. I also get a lot of water coming out of the muffler. Was I on the right path with the fuel line analysis or should I look at electrical? Could it be both? The starter cranks much faster since I replaced the plugs, but I still wonder. Any help is greatly appreciated.

a rough idle/high idle is indicative of a malfunctioning TPS(throttle position sensor) this is located on the throttle body ,is attached with (2) screws/bolts to the throttle body housing right off the butterfly shaft. it has either 2 wire or 4 wire plug. the replacement part can be purchased at locale auto parts store. I would also agree that a full service and tuneup be done. this will help with performance and will increase the fuel efficiency. please rate this...thanks
SOURCE: 95 Maxima SE Cuts out on idle and in mid drive
I am having the same problem with a Maxima 1995, I have tested each coil for resistance and conductivity, they all seem OK. Just changed the fuel filter. Have cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor with spray cleaner twice, The screws which hold down the fuel injectors seem to be 'frozen', so I haven't been able to take them off yet. I'm going crazy. I get the gas smell, but I haven't seen any exhaust smoke!
I have been thinking of the fuel pressure regulator, or maybe the fuel pump, but I'd expect the problem to be more constant if these parts were at fault. I can't get anyone to read the Codes for me. The check engine light stays on!

sounds like bad Idle Air control valve Not Cheap
SOURCE: 1997 Nissan Hardbody has rough idle/surges/stalls
the 2001 altima is what i have and I had the same problem as you. turned out to be a bad head gasket factory used cheap ones for a few years before they found the problem. one way to test this is to get a can of carborator cleaner and spray it around the area where the head meets the block under the intake problem should be around the 4th cylinder or close to driver side. if the head gasket is bad the rough idle will smooth out while you are spraying the head.

it'll either be your ignition system (spark plugs, distributor cap, etc) or more likely your fuel system (most likely your fuel pump or your fuel filter)
