Used 1990 Buick Riv trans slps in & outta gear; restart to engage

Shortly after install of used transmission, start car, put in reverse - not engage, put in drive - not engage; restart ignition, engages. Sometimes when taking off w/cold engine, tranny slips into neutral. Restart ignition to get in gear....dangerous!! Could this be a computer issue? The car has hardly been used since install & garage says they can't fix it....their only job was to install.

The fluids and filter are new; car has hardly been driven since install. Mechanics say the transmission is good.

have you checked all the fluid and changed the filter?

The only other thing i can think of that would cause this problem is the valve body inside the transmission is leaking and/or cracked. I have seen this several times before- it will shift "wierd" and slip also, normally with no pattern whatsoever.
A valve body is not that expensive to change, but I sugest you have it looked at first..

Not a computer issue. Transmission has problems could be filter stopping up, which also means problems.

Definitely not good. The transmission is slipping internally due to worn gears and clutch packs. It will have to come out for rebuilding, IMO. Have a transmission shop check it out.
Good luck.

I would begin by replacing the filter if its not new, 2 possibility of issue, faulty shifting module or defective transmission rebuilt. just because it has been rebuilt does not mean the individual work on it did a good job. the less cost effective way is to locate used modulator from ebay or junk yard, if that does not rectified the issue than more likely it will be the tranny. the bad part is that I dont know of a company offer a bench test for the tranny modulator.

1st, 2nd gear and reverse will not engage on my 4 speed manual transmission. what is the problem and how should i go about getting it fixed?

Sounds like the transmission is worn out. It could be rebuilt or call around to the junk yards and see if any has a good clean used trans. If you get a junk yard one change the fluid before you drive the truck.

1990 honda accord

possibly 2 solutions 1. manual transmission --probably clutch fluid. find out where it is, fill it , and make sure the cap is closed exactly like you took it off. if it's not closed clompletely, pressure won't be able to build up. 2. auto trans-- transmission fluid..note there is no dipstick to check fluid.
