Reply to sonic2552 the van in question is australian ford econovan 1987 model it has 2.2 litre R2 diesel i believe mazda call them a bongo in certain other countries, i have since found all the timing marks, put on TDC actually fairly easy to find, for your info all pulleys marked & markers notched in rear belt cover,engine is also used in asia/kia rocksta - mazda B series utes & what we call here in OZ ford courier ute( re badged B series) thanx for your help & hopefully this info helps others.

Well, just remember a head gasket that fails is a victim, and not a cause. Something else is not right, like head warped. you need to find that issue or gasket will fail again real soon.

There could be a short to ground in one of the wires. Perhaps take it to an auto electric shop to investigate further.

1. Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal.
2. Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the radio (audio) system security code.
3. Removal:
3.1. Disconnect the battery.
3.2. remove the upper radiator hose.
3.3. Remove the fan cowling.
3.4. Remove the cooling fan.
3.5. Remove the air-conditioning drive belt.
3.6. Remove the tensioner.
3.7. Remove the ancillary drive belt.
3.8. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
3.9. Remove the timing belt covers.
3.10. Align the timing marks.
3.11. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
3.12. Remove the timing belt.
