Your comment about the coil..

:well lets see if were getting spark. did you take one of the ignition coil and stick and flat head screw driver inside the coil and then you can have someone start it to see if you have spark. it takes two people to do this test. If no spark then we can look at the coil pack. let me know.... :

I already checked it, it is getting a spark. Thought it could be gas in the oil because the oil had a smell of gas in it. So I gave it an oil change and its still not starting.

Hi Lisa , what engine does it have ? could have come with 5 different one's an how many miles on it ? Gas in oil could be caused by a few different thing's , one of which is worn piston rings . A leaking fuel pressure regulator , a fuel injector stuck on , , high fuel pump pressure . Is the check engine light lit or a security light ? Anti-theft system problem . What is the fuel pressure ? are the injectors firing ?

Take off the distributor cap. Check the star wheel that is splined to the distributor shaft that the pick-up coil uses. Make sure this wheel is not loose on the distributor shaft. It is right above the pick-up. If it is loose, replace the distributor. This is a common problem. If it needs one, all the part stores stock the distributor.

First of all , is it the original engine and if not, what kind of motor/ignition system do you have.If it is all original it should be a 6 volt system with contact points. First thing to check is if you have spark at the coil wire (distributor end). If not check if the distributor rotor turns as the engine is being cranked. If it does have spark you have a faulty rotor or cap, if no spark check for voltage to the + side of the coil. If you have voltage at the coil, check the contact points gap/condition . If the points are not burnt and are properly gapped (about .018") then you either have a faulty ignition coil. Check all of the above and repost.

Thanks, Dave

Anyone have the firing order diagram for a 2011 dodge nitro 4.0 liter v6? Also how do I get to the spark plugs on the drivers side? I can't figure it out!!!

Here ya go
Each individual spark plug is located under each ignition coil. Each individual ignition coil must be removed to gain access to each spark plug See: Ignition Coil\Service and Repair\Ignition Coil - Removal

  1. Remove necessary air filter tubing at throttle body.
  2. Prior to removing ignition coil, spray compressed air around coil base at cylinder head.
  3. Prior to removing spark plug, spray compressed air into cylinder head opening. This will help prevent foreign material from entering combustion chamber.
  4. Remove spark plug from cylinder head using a quality socket with a rubber or foam insert. Also check condition of ignition coil O-ring and replace as necessary.
  5. Inspect spark plug condition

Car will crank but not start. cant tell if i have a fuel problem or spark problem

An easy way to test your spark plugs is to:

1) remove 1 of the spark plug wires from a spark plug
2) stick a small screw driver into the wire where it would attach to the spark plug
3) holding the handle of the screw driver, hold the shaft of the screwdriver within an 1/8" to the frame
4) have someone else try to start the car

You should see a spark jump from the screw driver shaft to the frame. This will let you know if you have ignition at the spark plug.

190e mercedes benz 1989.hard to start.backfire, no current going to spark plug.fuel pump works. replace ignition control.and coil, wires.

This is likely due to a bum TDC sensor on the driver's side, rear of engine, on the bell housing so it can read the flywheel. If it does not know where the engine is, it will not fire. The ignition control modules are pretty durable and don't often require replacement. The other end of the TDC sensor goes into the ignition control module. Follow the wire under the intake and it will lead you to a 5mm hex bolt on the side of the bell housing. You may have to soak this with rust penatrant and try to twist it back and forth to remove it. Also, if for some reason the new one wont simply push in, it's not the wrong one, get a flash light and look inside the hole, the very thin metal sleeve may have remianed. Use a flat head screw driver and try and crush it from the side so you can use pliers to remove it. Let me know if you need anything else.

My car will not run or starts and will not take the gas when it rains or damp outside. when it sets a day or two then runs great. What can it be. I was told it can be a module. Which one. yes 1996...

If your car is equipped with a 2.4L Quad 4 engine, you most likely need to replace your ignition coils. They are located inside what is called the "IDI Module" This is the large cover on the top of the engine that says "Quad 4". The ignition coil housing and spark plug boots should also be replaced. (See pictures below)

To replace the coils, disconnect the IDI electrical connector (Driver's side of the IDI Module) Remove the 4 bolts retaining the IDI Module to the cylinder head.

NOTE: be careful not to loose the washers under the bolts. Sometimes they will stick to the IDI Module and will fall off when you remove it. It is best to take a small screwdriver and get them loose before they have a chance of getting lost. Trust me...It happens all the time.

Remove the IDI Module from the cylinder head and flip it over. Remove the 4 screws holding the coil housing to the IDI module and remove the housing. Remove the screws holding the ignition coils and remove the coils. Reverse procedure to install.

Doesn't start

I assume that when you started the car the starter was running and the engine was cranking.
Remove the #1 boot from spark plug 1. Insert a screw driver to the booth, bring the screw driver near the engine body (about 2 mm) and let someone start the engine. If there's no spark, replace the ignition coil. If there's a spark, check the ignition timing with a strobe light.

Before changing the ignition coil, make sure that the wires connected to it are alright. Remove them from the coil and switch on the engine. Measure the DC volts from the wires. You should get a 12 volts reading between them.
