The guages on the dash are randomly registering either full then empty ( gas guage), speed and tacometer will randomly bounce up and down, sometimes the speedometer will register 0 and sometimes it bounces up and down, etc.. Sometimes they all work fine.Replaced the VSS as suggested by one repair source but there was no change. Thanks
Check your alternator..take it to autozone or advance and have them test it while the car is running its free or charge your alternator may be power surging and cause the guages to go crazy like mine did and was the alternator give that a try

Glad to hear my 2000 Xterra is not the only one possessed by the digital dash demon! I sometimes wonder how many miles are really on it because the odometer, rpm and speed comes and goes when it wants. I've been known to use my GPS to gauge my speed while driving.

Either a fuse blown, check under hood in engine compartment and under dash for fuses. Best to refer to your own manual to see where the instrumentation fuses are located. But check all fuses. Also, get yourself a quick, and free, diagnostic check from a local Autozone if you have one.
