Slight hesitation on pull-off with slight autobox shudder

When driving off, forward or reverse, the autobox on my 2004 Ford Explorer V6 4X4 automatic shudders momentarily before moving. The vehicle was bought recently with 80k miles on it. Do you think the gearbox needs a service, oil filter change or change of transmission fluid?

Thanks.

Aletia.

Yes. Sounds like a plugged Trans filter or burned fluid. A full service on the Trans usually runs about $90 and is money well spent.

Another problem-which bugged me for 3 months, and had your similar symptoms, was a worn out fan clutch. It sent a shudder throughout the vehicle which mimicked a transmission issue. I know it sounds silly, but a new fan clutch cured my shifting issues.

The fan should rotate smoothly with some resistance (Engine OFF, of course) If you feel binding of any kinf, it probably is bad. Also check to see if you can cause movement fore and aft. If you can get it to rock back and forth, it is bad and needs to be replaced.

A fan clutch for that vehicle usually runs about $55

1997 f150 4x4 5.4 e4od transmission shifts hard after driving on highway 3 miles if i shut off key restart it will work ok for another 3 miles

Usually bad "solenoid pack" inside automatic trans. Although, you usually also get a slight hesitation followed by a "clunk" when switching from forward to reverse. Also possibly computer programming error. If it has "adaptive" shifting (i.e. "computer learns your driving pattern and shifts accordingly"), you can have Ford change the programming to a standard shift pattern. (It's a wonderful difference in transmission performance).

When i put the selector into drive i get only slight drive reverse is ok is the autobox knackered

Pull the dip stick out of the transmission and look at the fluid. If it looks burned and smells burned, Your transmission is burned up. You can have it rebuilt or purchase a new one.

Slight hesitation then a clunk when I hit the gas

Hi,
Usually a "clunk" when you put it in drive or reverse, might indicate a U-joint needing replaced.
Hope this helps...

Acts like it is in neutral when shifted into Drive AND when on the road it resists changing gears smoothly.

check the linkage from gearstick to gearbox .if ok .check and change transmission fluid

1999 EXPLORER,WONT GO INTO REVERSE ONLY PARK AND DRIVE,

If it acts like neutral in reverse, the low/rev band is likely broken. I've seen it before. If everything is good forward. Pulling trans is the only way to fix it

Transmission hesitates going into reverse only!

Solenoid Pack in the transmission is going out of it. I have put two in mine...both under warranty in my 2000 Explorer
