Checking gear box levels

Check you have enough transmission fluid, does it surge when changing up when warm? When checking fluid level run gear shift through gears 3 times to circulate fluid place in park then check level do this with engine running and parking/handbrake on. If you don't run shift through gears before checking level dipstick will give false reading.....usually saying you have enough but when fluid has to circulate there won't be and hence trouble with gear change when hot.

well you need tranny service.?

did you scan the PCM first to see if there are DTC errors for the trans. seem not and that is first. after.
1: checking levels in box.
2: checking fuses.

have you tried checking the gear fluid? maybe its below minimum level. if not grounded or damage sensor.

if you are checking engine oil there will be a dip stick some auto gearboxes need to be checked on a hoist as they have a a level plug on the gearbox like a manual gear box. i dont no of any cars that dont have a dipstick in the engine

Sounds as if the gear box has been over filled. When checking and filling the gear box, always do so with the engine running! The engine should be at idle and the best way is to sit inside the vehicle with your foot pressed hard on the brake and the park brake on. Select each gear in turn and then leaving the vehicle in neutral with engine running, check the level on the dip stick with the red top. You'll notice there are four marks. Two indicate the level with a cold engine and the other two, if the engine is hot. (those are the upper two marks) The marks are indicated as hot and cold. Don't exceed the upper marks.

If it is a Tip Tronic box you won't be able to check the level.This can only be done by VW Dealer.The diagnostic tester has to be coupled up to check gear oil temp before checking level.

jolt from the rear of the car when the auto gear box changes in low gear is a common fault in the older s types. most of the time is a sign of the gear box on its way out. is worth checking gear box oil level and oil quality though. noise from near side rear would probably be the damper rose joint which make a knocking noise when they wear.

hi, some people do this wrong when checking the fluid in the box, i gather it is an auto box?, when checking correct amount of fluid in an auto box the engine has to be running to get the correct mark on the auto-box dip stick, strange as it seems this is normal to do, unlike engine where it has to be not running, try running engine then check fluid, if lower then max line top up, then run again till you get the correct level if it is a manual gear box, just top up the fluid till it starts running out of the filler plug, that then means its the correct level, but do not run it if manual gear box....hope this helped

look in the engine bay and you will find a big dip stick near the back of the engine bay this has a long dip stick on it, thats were you "top up" the atf fluid,, dont over fill the gear box, only add oil a little at a time
