I have a 1998 BMW 528 I. The drivers side door latch will not catch. So door will not close or lock

same problem but on a 1990 BMW 525i - just happened last night
    - the latch on the door will go up and down but will not "catch" when you close the door --- is there some kind of spring mechanism in the door that may be broken?
to Lewisr488--did you figure out a way to at least secure the door so you could drive it? thanks

I was told that it is temperature related. Was it cold when this happened? I have an 1998 528i. Latch assembly will not work. The car was driven holding the ds door closed and supposedly when the mechanism got warm it did latch and lock normally

My '98 528i does the same thing when it is cold, especially if I wash the car beforehand. It will close/latch when the car warms up.

Wit the door open, using a srewdriver, use it to throw the catch, then see if the latch locks into position. if it doesn't then a new catch will be required as the locking latch spring inside the latch would have broken

The driver side door on my 2002 chevy blazer wont close.how do i fix it?

Door pins are a common failure on that series of Blazer/S10's. Also, another point of contention that the door faces is a sticky latch. Basically, the door latch re-latches itself and when you shut the door into the catch, it slams into it and bounces off. An easy fix is a 3 part cocktail of brake parts cleaner. Open and shut the latch with a screw driver acting as the catch and your interior door handle a few times. P'Blaster, open and shut the door a few times with the screwdriver acting as the catch. Finally, a good shot of white lithium grease. Open and shut the door with a screwdriver as the catch several times. Once you feel it is un-stuck, actually close and open the door several times. If you notice the door rising every time it catches, you MUST replace the door pins (cheap fix). If the door still has issues, replace the door latch (and since you're in there, do some PM and replace the actuator as well).

My 1998 bmw 528I doors won't close. The door catch is stuck

You should be able to move the door catch with your hands or a short heavy screw driver. If you use a screw driver be careful not to scratch your paint. Before trying to move the catch be sure your door is unlocked. It should flip back to the open position with a little effort.

Good Luck

My BMW x3 2005 back door will not close. The latch doesnt seem to catch. We tried locking and unlocking the doors you can hear the mechanism working but latch is catching. Lock/latch seems to just spin...

Hold down the "open" button on your remote and simultaneosly pull the inside handle of that door open. I just had the issue with my driver's door and as my son tried to "help" (he's 9), one of the passenger doors also got stuck! After not finding a non-tech response, played around some until the the dran latch obliged on the front door. Repeated on passenger door and whew! :-)

Driver side door does not close. Latch broken and door sits down below catch on body of car.

may need new hinges on door and body of vehicle, if so it is about 600 -700 to replace , may be able to get new bushing and pins , without replacing hinges

1998 4x4 ford explore driver side door will not

There are long linkage rods from the inside handle to the latch assembly. There should be an adjustment on these links. Too tight keeps latch from locking, too loose it won't unlatch. Use a screw driver or rod to trip the latch asm so you don't have to keep opening and closing the door. Also if it sticks closed and won't unlatch, the door won't be locked closed on you.

My rear drivers side door on my 1998 Lumina will not stay closed & lock. The power lock works, the mechanism itself does not catch and lock the door.

Try cleaning the latch with WD40. Work the latch open and close with your fingers and lube it with the WD40.
