The check engine light came on on my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Got an OBD 11 and checked it for a code and the code that came up is:
P0455

Evaporative Emmission Control System Leak Detected (Gross Leak)

What do I do now and what does this mean exactly, what is wrong with the car and what parts does it need to be fixed and an approximate cost and time labour should take

i have a problem happening to me the engine light comes and goes as it pleases do you have a problem reaching max rpm as well? does it cut out at around 5300?

Well actually this is the most embarasing code to get... It actually means your emission purge line is inoperative. Yes your scanner told you a generic definition, which is the nature of OBD 2 but, the truth is that 10 out of 10 times this code will not be fixed by replacing the gas cap. This particular code relates to any one of 3 components, and two sensors in your evap system. Test the sensors, and if they are good, then have your evap canister weighed. If it is the correct weight, then don't replace it, check the valve on the purge line, if that is fine then you have to replace the filler neck. Not because the filler neck is bad, but because there is a filter made into it which is connected to the purge line which is plugged with charcole and fuel, and this is where it gets embarasing... Its plugged because you over filled your tank too many times. Letting the pump go until it shuts its self off is very easy, but also very costly. As you have just found out.

Ok so I have the same "gross emissions leak" code.However I am also getting less gas mileage and the car has less power. I have a 2006 Hyundai Tucson 4cyl 2 wheel drive. Please help!

That code indicates a leak in the evap system for emissions. first and easiest thing to do is replace fuel cap. (ck to see if its loose). once the cap is replaced. go through several "drive cycles" (starting and driving car) if that was the problem, the light will turn off on its own. if lite does not shut off in few days, other components are suspect. ie. evap vent valve, fuel filler pipe. any breach in fuel system or evap test system. this code does not present a running condition and is considered "safe" to drive.

Question edited for clarity. P codes for DTCs must have upper case P.

All questions need FULL 'year make model'.

White smoke is steam, and this is normal at this time of year and is mentioned on this website a LOT at this time of year. Gasoline has weather in it at molecular level and is burned off as steam.

P0445 on my 2003 hyundai tiburon Gt evap

This code's description is P0455 Evap Emission System- Large Leak. Usually ,arge leak means you drove or still driving your vehicle with loose or missing gas cap. Check your gas cap if it is tight. Even if that is the case , tightening it might not turn the check engine light off. So you have to erase the code with a scanner. If your gas cap is in place and tight then you probably have a leak in the emission system which includes numerous parts. So it should be inspected by a proffesional.

Having the same problem the other guy described.

First of all, these codes are what are called "Powertrain Trouble Codes' (that's what the "P" means P=Powertrain). TCM Request (Transmission Control Module = TCM). The request was to turn on the 'Check Engine" light.
P0720 - output speed sensor circuit malfunction
P0715 - Input speed sensor (turbin speed) circuit malfunction
P0442 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Small Leak)
P0455 - Evaporative Emission System Leak (Large Leak)
Check fuel filler cap problems - for Evap Emiss leaks
Replace the pulse generators & have the trans fluid replaced/flushed.
The Main Catalyst System Efficiency Bank 1 Is P0420, not P0442
If you had P0420 code, the catalytic converter is shot... and that's an expensive component.

1999 lincoln navigator obd code p0455

Either the fuel cap, or the evap solenoid on the charcoal canister. I'd start with the fuel cap.
