Transmission wont shift into 3rd gear.

I have a 1999 GMC Suburban 1500 with the 2wd and the 4l60 E transmission never seems to shift into 3rd gear. In drive it doesnt want to shift into 2nd and just slips out of gear at about 30mph. If I place the gearshift selector manually into 2 it drives without slipping but maxs out at about 40mph. Do I need a complete rebuild? Is it the solenoids that need replacement or? Thanks for any assistance!

how much will it cost for the selinoids to be replaced on a 1999 gmc suburban c1500

Just fixed other multi-function switch problems but now the transmission only goes from 1st to 2nd and no higher, reverse is fine. Sounds similar to other posters. I'll look into the solenoid.

I had this exact problem on my 2005 5.3L Suburban... It would shift into 1 and 2 and reverse, but not 3 and 4.

I took it into a transmission shop, and he said the 3-4 shift solenoid was burned up. Wanted 1500 to fix it. Far from home, so I have to pay it.

Yes your selinoids need replacing. I found the awnser to this question in the search for my own issue. This awnser came from one who just spent 2 months trying everything else..

Ok, I have replaced the shifting solenoid for 3-4 and the speed sensor plus changed the trans. filter and fluid. It still will not shift of out! What next? The only code is the Speed Sensor still.

Does a 99 gmc suburban have a 700R4 transmission?

700R4 is an old name. About the late 80's they were renamed 4L60. But you would not have that either. 93+ Chevy trucks have a 4L60E
(there are others such as the 4L80E which is a heavt duty transmission for like work trucks)

I had a similar problem with a Dodge Caravan - On the Dodge, it's called limp mode, designed to protect the engine and tranny. If you can get the OBD-2 engine codes and look them up online you may find that the problem is elsewhere in the drivetrain. Not really an answer, but a solid suggestion of where to go from here....

Check that the OD solenoid on the torque converter is good still. When the R4 wont go into OD you have no more gears than 1st an 2nd. If the OD clutch drum was relaced if it was burnt, that will make a problem also. You have to have OD in order for these babies to work right.

Speedometer doesn't work and transmission wont shift

Hi, make sure you check the speed cable that runs to the engine, it may be severed. As for the tranny, you have some major gear problems that will require pulling this transmission for a deeper look. i would have a look at the transmission filter as well.
