Service Engine Soon light came on on my 1998 Ford Escort. Checked the code and it was P1405 - signaling EGR valve issue. I removed the EGR valve/tube and used carb cleaner to clean it out, as well as the ports on the intake manifold and exhaust manifold. There definitely was some crud built up on the EGR port on the intake manifold. Cleaned it well, put everything back together. Started car, and Service Engine Soon light was off. After driving car for about 30 miles, Service Engine Soon light came on again. Checked code again and it was P1405 again. Removed EGR valve/tube, cleaned it out with carb cleaner, cleaned out ports again, everything looked ok. Started car, Service Engine Soon light was off. Drove it some more, and again at about 28-30 miles, the Service Engine Soon light came on. At this point I'm guessing I need to replace the EGR Valve or maybe the DFPE sensor is at fault. Any ideas?

I suggest you replace the EGR valve position sensor.
SOURCE: Hello... My name is Marcy... I have had my 2004
Hi Marcy,
I have a 2003 Grand Am GT with 185K on it currently. I have had the intake manifold gasket replaced, the cylinder heads done last year and now my SES light comes on now and then, had it scanned and the P1404 fault code comes up..they tell me it related to the EGR valve. Luckily, I work at a car dealership, but my car hesistates to get speed going on the highway, the RPM's will be up to like 3 and I'll be doing 35mph. I thought it was the transmission starting to go, but hopefully not. Anyway, I feel your pain, they did guess work last year and was replacing parts I didn't need only to find it was the cylinder heads leaking. I didn't have the usual symptoms of white smoke, etc. Anyways, I would recommend calling Pontiac and tell the dealer to cut the **** and fix the damn car. That's what I did and they were hot on the case involving the general manager of the store. They ended up giving me a huge goodwill because I told Pontiac that they were just putting parts in my car, charging me and not fixing the issue. I got a free rental and everything. I was going to report them to the Attorney General. I hope you find the issue with your vehicle, I just paid my off literally last week after a 5 year loan and I want to have this car for a couple of more years seeing as I just put so much $$$ into it.
Let me know how you make out.
All the best.
Darrell
SOURCE: okay ive replaced the egr
I think you got misinformed about what fault P0420 is, the GM manual says this: "P0420 - Catalyst System Low Efficiency" What does that mean? it means the main catalytic converter in the exhaust system is worn out, it could be the Catalyst monitor that is bad, it is what triggers the code when it reads a certain voltage from the system, but that is rare, you could replace it (the catalyst monitor) and see if the code clears, if not you will need a new main Catalytic Converter.

Did you have the engine scanned, or did you do it yourself? The reason I ask is, the code would need to be cleared after the new egr valve was installed. You would need to do another scan, and then clear the code with the scanner tool. If you tried to clear the light by removing power from the ECM, that would only clear the light from the dash temporarily. The code would still be present in the ECM memory which would cause the light to reappear.

Are you sure you have EGR flow?? Hold the EGR valve open the engine should run poorly, if not you have no flow.
This means either the EGR position sensor hose is pulled off or damaged or the sensor is defective. The sensor is referred to as the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation valve) DPFE sensor.
