Hybrid system engages for a few hundred feet of travel then quits. Fuel gauge and gear indicator blink, traction battery empty, check engine light solid on. Car worked fine yesterday. and battery was full when I parked it for the night. Display does not show the usual flow of the works.
You must get a reading from the codes. this could be anything from a bad HV battery cell to a bad CVT (transmission). So without codes you cannot tell which component is in error. Go to walmart or harbor freight and pick up an inexpensive code reader, then you might save a few buck or some auto parts stores offer free readings - Auto Zone does I think. Get the codes, then you can look them up online.

SOURCE: 1995 toyota avalon will not start and gear shift
Sounds like a battery problem. The clicking sound is usually the starter solenoid trying to engage the starter but not enough voltage or amps. There has to be enough power or you will not be able to move shifter assuming you pushed the brake pedal down while trying to shift out of park. And, it hasn't been noted whether it is a manual or auto trans.
