2004 Mercury Sable, Want access to antenna plug in back of radio

Wish to gain access to the antenna "plug in" in the back of the radio.
Can not see it from under dash on drivers side, and do not know how to remove face cover panel around radio and heater. Suspect with the cover off, radio mounting fasteners can be loosened so radio can be pulled forward to gain access to back of radio where antenna plugs in.

    Hi 54harley,

I made the u-shape tools with a hanger as suggested. At first they go in with no resistance, then I pushed them in about 1- 1/2 inchs after feeling resistance from the clips. At first I was not able to slide the radio stack out, but slipping my fingers in the cassette tape slot, I pulled it toward me and the right side of the radio stack started to slide out, but the left side would not. I thought it might be cocked so I gently pushed the right side back in with the intention of trying to slide the radio out straight. Trouble is now even repeating the same process I can not get either side of the radio stack to release. There is really nothing to pulll on except my fingers in the tape cassette slot, and in spite of wiggling up, down, and all around with the ushaped wire in, no luck. Any suggestions? Does the wire that goes into the holes have to be a certain gague or diameter? How do you feel the clips release?

The control panel is held in by 4 internal clips which are inside the four holes at the edges of the panel. Take 2 pieces of coat hanger and bend them into a U-shape and insert one into the two holes on the left, and the other into the two holes on the right. About 1-1/2 inches until you feel the clips release. Using the hangers like handles, sort of push outwards on each one and pull the panel towards you. There are electrical connectors and vacuum connectors back there, so don't go crazy. Disconnect them depending on what you're doing. When you put it back in, make sure the rear support engages the support rail in there, and make sure the clips snap in place

I'm sorry that this isn't working for you. The diameter of the wire doesn't really need to be any specific size, I suppose big enough and solid enough to fit into the holes and not be weak. If you can think of anything else that would work, or that you want to try, that should probably be okay too. I've only done this twice, the first time by myself with coat hangers, and the second time with a couple of picks and a couple of long, really skinny screwdrivers. However, I was doing it for a friend on his car, and he was holding two of the instruments himself, because I don't have four hands.Because it was extremely cramped in there with both of us trying to do this with absolutely no room to work with, it was indeed more difficult than the first time. The biggest problem with the whole operation is the ability to use whatever tools your trying to do this with as handles, because like you mentioned, there's really no place to put your hands. You just have to get the knack of pushing outwards (or sideways) once you feel the clips release. But it's certainly much easier to accomplish using hangers or whatever bent into U-Shapes than individual instruments. The time I did this with the coat hangers, it took four or five tries before I was able to successfully release the clips and keep a good hold onto the handles at the same time. And it certainly doesn't want to come out if it's cocked by very much. As far as my actually knowing how the clips are shaped or work, I don't really know because on the first time, the problem wasn't really the clips or anything as much as just me struggling with the handles. The second time the biggest problem was two different people with no room to move our arms trying to get it together at the same time. But on both times, once I was able to figure out what I needed to do, it went rather smoothly. There's supposed to be a set of Ford Radio Removal Tools that are available at auto parts stores, but when I tried to find a store with them onhand, I had no luck whatsoever. In fact, it was the guy behind the parts counter who told me about the coat hanger trick. If you can't figure out how to make it work, or find something better than a coat hanger, I imagine you could always contact the dealer, and purchase a set through them. About the only other thing I can say is keep trying to get better with your manipultion technique, and be patient. I'm sorry you're having trouble, and I hope you can figure it out.

Car radio keeps scanning with no audio, how do I get it to work right?

If the radio will not stop scanning usually the antenna is either disconnected or faulty. You will need to remove the radio and check the antenna connection at the back side. The small pin in the middle goes to the antenna and the metal sleeve around it goes to ground or the metal of the car body. If everything is good with the antenna then the radio may be faulty.

Changing rear struts on a 1999 mercury sable

First off you must remove the back seat to gain access to the three mounting nuts of the upper strut mount. Then you can remove the nut and bolt that pinches the the rear spindle assembly to the lower strut. separate the two and pull the strut assembly out of the car.

2001 Mercury Sable - Radio Issue

this is not strange at all, the problem is the symptom of a defective antenna or the antenna ground to the chassis sheet metal of the car, also the coax to the radio can be defective.
