What kind of fluid goes in the convertible top reservoir on a 2000 XK8 Jaguar?

The top had been going up and down fine but I did not cycle it for a few months. Everything went Ok and then the rear windows wouldnt go up either. So, you heard the typical hydraulic whine. It appears that the reservoir in the passenger side rear fender is below the line. Can it be drained right there? What fluid goes in it? thanks

I have solved part of problem,, if you use the manual latch key and close the latch, you need to push the wrench all the way counter clockwise and the windows do go up. the latch mechanism has the activation switch in it..need to be fully closed

Well, replace the offending unit, then bleed the air out of the system...Sometimes you have to remove components and invert them to get all of the air out.

Convertible top goes down and won't come back up.

You are probably low on fluid.
Behind the rear seat is the motor/pump/reservoir.
With the top down, fill the reservoir till it overflows with ATF. Cycle the system a few times. Repeat till the reservoir will accept no more fluid.
Look for leaking lines or cylinders. The fluid must have gone someplace.
Always replace lines and or cylinders in pairs.

My convertible top wont go up

You are probably low on fluid.
Behind the rear seat is the motor/pump/reservoir.
With the top down, fill the reservoir with ATF.
Cycle the system a few times.
Repeat till the reservoir will accept no mor fluid.
Chedk the lines and cylinders for leaks. The fluid must be going someplace.
You can change it to a manual top by removing the bolt at the top of the cylinders and lowering the both shafts down into the cylinders.

MY 99 XK8 CONVERTIBLE WINDOWS GO DOWN 1/4 '' EVERYTIME YOU OPN THE DOOR BUT NOT WILL GO UP AUTOMATICALLY,AS DESIGNED TO DO.HOWEVER THEY WILL GO UP IF YOU RAISE THEM WITH THE SWITCH INSIDE THE CAR,BOTH...

It just needs resetting.Hold each window switch down until you hear a click at the top and then go down all the way and hold until it clicks at the bottom of its travel.A low battery will cause this sometimes or a  battery change.Tony/Hills Motors, San Mateo, CA

My convertible top will not close lock and slow to come up

This is a VERY common problem with these xk convertibles. The most common is the fluid thickens up and the motor has trouble moving the top up and down. What you have to do is perform a convertible fluid flush, which is a pretty difficult task. Jaguar has updated fluid for this flush but it cost like 90 buck a quart, luckily you only need one but its pretty labor intensive. If your look at a dealership to perform this repair is pretty expensive.

I have JAGUAR XK8 CONVERTABLE the roof is slightly open and wont shut how do I close it manually

Hmm, you may need to get the dealer to adjust the cables. Also make sure the pump has fluid (right side trunk, behind the cover). Once the top comes down to the top of the window, you can see the device that should pull it down tight. In an emergency, there is a hex key in the right side of the trunk that you can use to manually bring that down tight. Your vehicle manual explains how to do this emergency operation.
