Programming instructions for keyless entry remote on 1998 Grand Cherokee
SOURCE: 1996 Grand Cherokee keyless entry problem
That remote should not be able to be programmed by you, it needs to be programmed by the dealer using their computer. I know that some later and earlier models can be programmed by the user, but I did some research on this as i have a 96 as well and it seems the 96 was a dealer computer thing. If you in fact bought the remote from the dealer they should be willing to program it for FREE. Otherwise I was given a $30 estimate for the programming.

The dealer would have to do this. Or you can rent a DRBIII at techautority.com and it will guide you through the program.
