Well there should not be any oil weeping UP out of the cylinders. First I would call a dealer service department and ask if there is a recall or a tech bulletin on the issue. Then I would ask if this is a common problem on that engine, if so how is it dealt with. Generally it is the valve cover gasket so I would make every effort to rule that out. If it can not be ruled out, then replace it. When replacing gaskets make very effort to clean both metal surfaces, do not reuse a gasket and bear in mind you are not dealing with steal or iron so be careful of what tool you use to clean the old gasket material away.

My car smells like its burning oil, and there is oil in my spark plug wells. Guy at auto parts store says I need to replace oil gaskets that go around spark plugs. Is this a valid diagnosis and if so is it...

As far as I know spark plugs only have a metal type washer to seal, and there is no other oil seal needed. I have know oil to leak from rocker cover and fill spark plug wells, but tis also often covers engine. Burning oil smell couldbe from oil going onto the outside of hot engine. Check oil loss via dip stick. Clean all oil from outside engine to find out sites of leaks. Hope this helps.

Changed the spark plugs and the old ones were covered in oil

i'm guessing that your car is a 4-cylinder. this is common for inline 4-cylinder engines. since the spark plug holes usually go through the valve cover, the valve cover gasket will leak and collect in the spark plug holes. to fix this you will have to replace the valve cover gasket.

Oil around spark plugs on 1992 honda accord

Yes the oil can cause the car to lose spark, the oil leak could be caused by the valve cover gaskets around the spark openings, but 9 times out of 10 it is the spark plug tube "O" rings. The top of the valve train comes off of the head, the "O" rings are between the two halves, that will fix the oil leak.

2001 jaguar s-type 4.0 oil in spark plug area

Hi bravo956
i also have the same problem regarding the oil leak. this is due to the spark plug gasket leaking and you will need to replace them. they are circular gaskets about 1.5 inches across that fit to the underside of the rocker covers and prevent oil from seeping down the long spark plug hole. when i investigated my leak i assumed it was just the rocker cover gasket that was leaking but once everything was removed it is obvious.
