wiggle steering wheel up and down sometimes the steering lock tab jams and wont permit key to turn ====if key worn down will not let ignition cylinder turn other is bad ignition cylinder
By far the most likely reason that one can't turn the key in the ignition is because the car was parked with the wheels turned. There is a security feature that locks the steering when the key is removed to prevent a thief from driving the car.
When the car is parked with the front wheels other than strait, the weight of the car will cause the wheels to try to straiten, If this engages the steering lock pressure is put on the ignition switch.
To start the car, look to see what direction the wheels are pointing. grasp the steering wheel and turn it TOWARD the direction the wheels are turning and now start the car.
Other causes may include wrong key, damaged ignition or other causes that may require a professional.
Put one hand on the steering wheel and rotate slightly left and right alternatively whilst turning the ignition key at the same time with the other hand. This might release the steering wheel and start ignition.
If the steering wheel was in a hard turn when the ignition was turned off and the key was pulled, maybe it's just in a bind. Put the key in the ignition and pull the steering wheel hard to the left, then to the right while trying to turn the ignition.
I'm assuming you mean your key wont turn in the ignition. first off check to make sure the car is in park. then what you gotta do is put in the key and put a little pressure as if turning but dont turn too hard, then even though the steering wheel is locked you will have to try to move it a little, if you parked with your tires turned then you will want to try to turn the wheel in the same direction, (even locked you should be able to move it about a half inch) you will have to turn the wheel hard but it should move enough to allow the key to turn, you may have to jiggle the key a little in the ignition but it should eventually turn, just remember not to try turning the key too hard, the extra force wont make it go but can cause the key to break. this tends to happen when you turn the car off andthe steering wheel gets locked if the wheels are turned hard in either direction. also if multiple attempts at this still dont work, try taking the key out and turning it over and trying again. Even though both sides of the key are identicle, because of wear on the key and the ignition, sometimes when the wheel locks the ignition, it will only turn if the key is put in a certain way. Hope this helps, good luck
put your key on the ignition and turn it and at the same time turn the steering wheel to both sides (do it with a little bit of force) and it will unlock.
That's a mecanism that all cars have for security.
try this..turn the steering wheel as hard as you can until it locks(any direction)then put key in ignition and holding wheel over (anyway)turn key to start car.then when you park up turn wheel over 1/2 turn to park...should work...(toyota have an antitheft steering lock)the wheel will turn when steering lock is on.rather than break lock.please do not try to see if it works....only works once...and not in handbook...
Try pressing the key down little bit while you are trying to turn it towards ignition, at the same time slowly turning the steering wheel clockwise and counter clockwise ( it's locked but it still moves a little bit), it should release the steering wheel lock.
hope it helps
p.s please rate the answer if you found it helpful, i need it for my ratings, thanks!
the steering wheel SHOULD be locked if the key is not in the ignition and turned to the 1st position. If you can turn the steering wheel more than an inch or so without the key n the first position, the ignition switch (read: thingy you put the key in) is bad.
Sometimes you may have to move the steering wheel slightly to one side or the other to get the key to turn, this in itself is not a cause for alarm. Try it and let us know. If this doesn't work, you are probably looking at a couple hundred dollars parts and labor to get the switch/steering wheel lock mechanism fixed.

DOES THE KEY ROTATE WHEN YOU PUT THE KEY IN OR NOT?
