Tip & How-To about Ford Cars & Trucks

Save time and effort replacing Ranger sealed beam lamps-all 1984 - 1992

Applicable to all seal beam lamp fitted Ranger 4 and 6, '84 thru 92--
Overview, mounting screw drop and "loss" is virtual certainty when removing lamp retainer ring because screw falls behind amber marker/parking lamp below where it cannot be seen or extracted by hand, leading to significant delay completing the replacement task. The following extra precautionary steps ensures lamp replacement of under 15 minutes (first time) and under 5 minutes after that;

1.Remove amber marker lamp cover lens below headlight.
    a.Remove 2 screws and lens.
b.Withdraw reflector back shell from behind and set aside. (Now dropped screw must fall to ground for quick and easy retrieval).
2.Place carpet remnant, large towel (folded) or any resilient, no-bounce pad on ground below headlight (where dripping screw will stay put and not bounce away out of sight). [Elapsed time 30 sec to 1-1/2 minutes]
3.Remove & Replace lamp using correct standard procedure this forum--but disregard silly, made-up procedure in Haynes manual
4.Undo step 1 in reverse to compete installation. [Elapse time 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 min; 2 - 5 minutes overall]
[Estim. Time savings: 15 to 30 minutes]

SIlly question - on a 1994 toyota pick-up, V-6 auto, 2-wd, how do you change a front running-light bulb? Does the whole front grill have to be removed? I remove the two phillips-head screws on the side, but it sees like the grill needs to be released to get access to the back of the fixture...

This is for the sealed beam type. If you have a different type, let me know and I will get those instructions for you.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Sealed Beams
See Figures 1 through 5

CAUTION Most headlight retaining rings and trim bezels have very sharp edges. Wear gloves. Never pry or push on a headlamp; it can shatter suddenly.

  1. Make sure the headlight switch is in the off position.
  2. Loosen the parking and side turn signal unit retaining screws. Then remove the units unplugging the connectors.

  1. Next, open the hood to gain access to the grille clips. Using a flat-bladded tool, push on the clips to release them and the grille.

  1. The sealed beam is held in place by a retainer and either 2 or 4 small screws. Identify these screws before applying any tools.DO NOT confuse the small retaining screws with the larger aiming screws. There will be two aiming screws or adjustors for each lamp. (One adjustor controls the up/down motion and the other controls the left/right motion.) Identify the adjustors and avoid them during removal. If they are not disturbed, the new headlamp will be in identical aim to the old one.

  1. Using a small screwdriver (preferably magnetic) and a pair of taper-nose pliers if necessary, remove the small screws in the headlamp retainer. DON'T drop the screws; they vanish into unknown locations.

A good kitchen or household magnet placed on the shank of the screwdriver will provide enough grip to hold the screw during removal.

  1. Remove the retainer and the headlamp may be gently pulled free from its mounts. Detach the connector from the back of the sealed beam unit and remove the unit from the car.

CAUTION The retainers can have very sharp edges. Wear gloves.
To install:

  1. Place the new headlamp in position and connect the wiring harness. Remember to install the rubber boot on the back of the new lamp; its a water seal. Make sure the headlight is right-side up.
  2. Have an assistant turn on the headlights and check the new lamp for proper function, checking both high and low beams before final assembly.
  3. Install the retainer and the small screws that hold it.
  4. Reinstall the headlight bezel and/or grille.

seal beam doesn't light

You should be able to replace just the headlight bulb itself, most cars haven't had sealed beam headlights since the '80s. Assuming that's what you mean by "seal beam". Is it the main beam/dip beam, the high beam, or is it a driving light/fog light (usually mounted down low in the bottom of the front bumper area)?
