How to replace cam sensor

This unit is part of the distributor.

OPERATION

See Figure 1
The ECM uses the camshaft signal to determine the position of the No. 1 cylinder piston during its power stroke. The signal is used by the ECM to calculate fuel injection mode of operation.
If the cam signal is lost while the engine is running, the fuel injection system will shift to a calculated fuel injected mode based on the last fuel injection pulse, and the engine will continue to run.

TESTING

See Figure 2

0900c1528008f0d3.jpg enlarge_icon.gifenlarge_tooltip.gif

Fig. Fig. 2: Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor wiring schematic

  1. Disconnect the CMP sensor wiring harness and connect an LED test light between CMP harness terminal C and battery ground.
  2. With the ignition ON and the engine off, verify that the test light illuminates.
  3. If not as specified, repair or replace the fuse and/or wiring.
  4. Carefully connect the test light between CMP harness terminal A and C and verify that the test light illuminates.
  5. If not as specified, repair the CMP harness ground circuit (terminal A).
  6. Turn the ignition OFF and disconnect the test light.
  7. Next, connect suitable jumper wires between the CMP sensor and CMP sensor harness. Connect a DC volt meter to the jumper wire corresponding to CMP terminal B and battery ground.
  8. Start the engine and verify that the voltage signal is 5-7 volts.
  9. If it is not as specified, the CMP sensor may be faulty.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Detach the sensor harness connector at the sensor.
  3. Unfasten the retaining bolt, then remove the sensor from the camshaft housing. Inspect the sensor O-ring for wear, cracks or leakage and replace if necessary.

To install:
  1. Lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil, then place on the sensor. Install the sensor into the camshaft housing.
  2. Install the CMP sensor retaining bolt, then tighten to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Attach the sensor harness connector.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

My fan is blowing but

Feel the hoses going into and out of the heater core. They should both be hot. There may be a 20 or 30 degree difference in temperature, but both should feel very hot to the touch. If one is really hot and the other just feels warm, the heater core is probably clogged. If you have access to an infrared thermometer, taking the temperature of the hoses is the best way to check this.
If both hoses feel "Warm" at idle and get really hot when the throttle is cracked open for a short period (20-30 Seconds ), the water pump may be the problem.
Hope this helps Give feedback FixYa

I cannot use the Automatic Locks and I can't find

It is a circuit breaker, in the fusebox at the left side of the dash it is a 20 amp for a 2-door, & a 30 amp for the 4-door. When you remove it use a test light there should be power on one side weather the key is on or off. If there is no power on either side, there may be a blown maxi-fuse in the fuse relay box under the hood. It can be tested with a fuse tester, or pull it out a & look at it.

My 1996 chevy truck want stay runing, when i push

You may have the same problem my Wifes car has right now- ice in the fuel line.

Dump a can of DryGas (or "Heet") in the tank, and after about an hour, start your truck. Let it run for 15 minutes or so (restart if it stalls) - if it will not run that long try moving your truck into a warm garage, let it sit for about an hour, and try again.

The DryGas does not perform miracles, and takes time, especially in the bitter cold as of late.

Fuel line icing is usually caused by allowing your vehicle to run nearly empty, and then refueling in cold weather. This causes condensation in the gas tank, which freezes in the gas lines.

I have repeated this mantra to my Wife for nearly our entire 27 years of marraige, but she still will run her tank nearly dry before getting gas, even though it has so far cost us two replacement gas tanks, more than a couple gas tank leak patches (the other problem with running low all the time is rotting out your tank!), and uncounted winter car starting problems. Please help me break the trend!

1996 chevy truck 1500. my windshield wipers work

Check for a loose fuse or loose wiring to the wiper. Also check for tight ground connection at the motor. The 'park' switch which completes each cycle may be intermittent. It might be a worn switch at the steering wheel.

Brake light not working

THERE IS A FUSE, USUALLY IT WILL BE LABELED STOP. THE ONE THAT SAYS BRAKE MAY BE FOR THE ABS TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. { REPLACE THE STOP FUSE } . IF THE STOPLIGHT SWITCH IS BAD, IT IS NOT EASY TO CHANGE. IF THE TURN SIGNALS ARE WORKING IN THE REAR OF THE TRUCK, THAT MEANS THE BULBS ARE O.K. A BAD TURN SIGNAL SWITCH CAN ALSO KEEP THE STOPLIGHTS FROM WORKING, { LAST RESORT, EXPENSIVE & HARD TO REPLACE }

1996 C1500 will start with started fluid and run

Hi, below are some generic troubleshooting procedures for checking your fuel delivery system followed by more specific instructions, including the wiring diagram for the fuel delivery system:
The fuel pump is inside the gas tank and is also usually sold with the fuel gage sending unit--an expensive and laborious R&R job. If the pump is working, you should hear it at least momentarily when the key is turned to the "on" position. If the pump is not working, the cause could be a fuse, a relay, an accident "kill" switch that needs resetting, or the pump itself. You'll want to rule out all of the inexpensive possibilities first. Use your owners manual (you can often find these online if you don't have the original) to locate the applicable fuse, relay, and/or cutoff switch. To check the relay and ignition switch, follow precedures at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6022358-relay_check. You can also check for voltage at the pump connector with a test light.
Assuming your pump works, fuel still needs to get to the engine. A clogged filter will certainly limit fuel flow, but will rarely prevent a car from starting. That said, filter replacement is an inexpensive bit of maintenance. Most likely cause of fuel not getting to the engine when the pump is working is the fuel injection system. Many anti-theft systems cut off the injectors when activated. If you have such a system, make sure your anti-theft system has not been activated. Also, the injectors require a certain level of fuel pressure. Though your pump may be working, it may not be producing pressure. If possible, have your fuel pressure checked or borrow the appropriate tool to test the pressure. Always check pressure at the fuel rail, as some designs include a separate regulator that is typically in the line in the engine compartment. The injectors may be controlled by an injector module or directly by the engine or powertrain control module/computer. The signals sent to the injectors can be checked using a special tester or oscilloscope. A simple but crude method of checking injector operation is to put a long screwdriver on the injector body and hold the handle to your ear while someone cranks the engine. If the injectors are working, you should hear the solenoid click once every 2 revolutions.

Finally, if you are getting fuel to the engine, make sure it isn't old or contiminated.

Here are some specific instruction for your truck:
If the pump is not coming on when you turn the key, first check the ECM B fuse. This fuse is probably in the engine compartment relay box, but may be inside the truck.
If the fuse is good, interrogate the fuel pump relay (usually in the engine compartment relay box) using the instructions at the link given above. There should be one hot terminal in the relay socket from the ECM B fuse. The relay is turned on by the ECM with a positive signal, so there should be two hot terminals in the socket when the key is on. If the realy is working, check for voltage at the pump connector.
To check for voltage at the fuel pump, use a 12 volt test light connected to the pink and tan wire terminals. Have someone turn the key on while you have your light connected.
If your fuel pump is turning on, but the injectors are not clicking, please get back to me. Also, let me know if you have any questions.
