The key lock wont turn
One of the tumbler blades has been pushed out farther than normal due to the cut of the wrong key. WD40 the lock inserting the tube into it. Put in the correct key and jiggle it while trying to turn key back and forth. Repeat as necessary. If after multiple attempts don't work (be patient) then tap the outside of the lock where you insert the key with a block if wood or small hammer. The vibration is what will allow the tumbler blade to slip back into place.

Ford escape problems
What I am going to suggest will require a little research. You can get a wiring diagram by using the Web and entering a search for your year and model vehicle, wiring diagrams and then select correct diagrams from the search result.
Most fuses are behind a panel on the passengers side of the floor console. There may be Relays inside a Powerbox for the 4x4 module. Check to see if there are any Vacuum lines going to the 4x4 unit as some systems use both electric and vacuum to make things work. If you have a Rotary shaped 4x4 shifter, sometimes the knob splits behind the junction where the knob fits on the shaft. It is just spinning and not turning the shaft to really work. For Vacuum, use a Vacuum pump or inhale through the vacuum line to see if any vacuum escapes to check for bad lines or a ruptured diaphram.
I looked up the 4x4 unit and there were some with internal problems which had to be fixed inside the case. One reliable site I use did not have a record of 4x4 problems or TSB's for it, so there was no Recall for this problem and were few in number.
The knob, fuses, and Relay I mentioned are worth looking at as well as the Vacuum parts if applicable.
