Put it in 4x4 mode and get someone to read your OBDii Codes to see what code is popping.. Sounds like a simple 4x4 switch BUT with the service engine light on an OBD reader would be a Great way to find the problem..

Have you checked for any codes in the ECM ? You may have a bad neutral safety switch

From the fuse to the range sensor is Brown/ light green. From the sensor to the lights is velvet/black. This is from a 2002. Pin 6 in the connector is the lamp feed.
