I have sony dvd rw aw - g170a but this drive is not working ...

The yellow exclamation point is telling you there is a problem with the device. First thing to do is uninstall the device using your hardware or device manager. Reboot. Your pc should automatically recognize the device on reboot and install the proper drivers. If not then you will have to go to the Sony website and download & install the drivers manually. If this does not fix the problem then your drive has went bad & will need replaced. Good luck & I hope this helps you out.

When I press the bottin on the dvd burner to open

yes frn this is happen due to the jam in the DVD rom. when you press the eject button put one pin in the hole that is just below the eject button. so that you can eject your DVD. or just hit the cd ROM slowly.

My drive cannot detect dvd disc but can read and write cd

Check device manager in control panel under hardware to see if you have a problem with anything (a big yellow check). The most likely casue is that your DVD burning software (not the microsoft programs) did not install properly. Find out the exact info about yours by downloading a freeware program called Belarc Advisor (Googe it), Oddly enough, you don't need drivers for the CD/DVD drives. They aren't even recognized unless you have a non-microsoft burning program. After you find out what burning software you have-- you have to seek a download at the computer manufacturer's website, if it came with the computer, as it may be a special program not related to the burning software if you purchased from the software manufacturer---go to their website for downloads or upgrades, and that should get you going.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

GOOD LUCK AND DONT FORGET TO RATE MY POST!! :D

Cd rom disappeared from computer

Hi to all.

My Sony CRX835E CD-RW (combo drive, writes to cd's, and plays dvd's) suddenly vanished from my computer and was not showing in my devices.
This is my cd drive for my LAPTOP.
So, as you can imagine, i wanted nothing more than to open her up, check all cabling was working/plugged in correctly, but being a laptop made it a little harder, seeing as i have never opened a laptop up.
That was going to be my last resort, seeing as it has run out of warranty.
Anyway, would like to inform both laptop users and pc users of the few solutions that can fix the vanishing cd drives.

First, check in device manager to see if it is showing there. If it is then it more that likely will have a yellow symbol next to it, saying it isnt working correctly. IN THIS CASE, it more often than not is a BIOS problem which can be caused by installing or uninstalling various differnt software, E.g nero, powerdvd, etc.

3 things you can try here.

1.
First off, quickest and easiest is to UNINSTALL the device from device manager. Then refresh the device manager. This will check again for any new plug and play hardware not installed.
Once that has done, and the drive is installed, the problem will hopefully be fixed.
If not, than try number 2.

2.
You proberly would have by now read of changing/deleting the values of UPPER/LOWER FILTERS in a specified pathway. There is a detailed walkthrough of how to do that on this site, so try this step, it has fixed alot of errors.

3.
Now this is another quick and easy way to try to solve the problem, and as far as i can understand the program pretty much does the same as option 2, but makes it alot easier for people with only a little knowledge of computers.
The site is called WWW.DOUGKNOX.COM
On that site, there is something called nocd/dvd fix. Give it a whirl, fast, easy and may work for you.

IF YOUR DEVICE MANAGER DOES NOT SHOW ANY SIGNS OF THE DRIVE THAT HAS GONE MISSING FROM MY COMPUTER, THESE STEPS ABOVE WILL DO NOTHING!!!

If your device manager does not show your drive, then you MUST check the cabling, making damn sure it is all plugged in correctly. Once you have done that and still no sign of a drive, then it means your drive has proberly died, and needs replacing.

Now, if you own a laptop which has gone out of warranty then i recommend if you choose to check the cabling, get someone who knows what they are doing to do that task for you.

MY SOLUTION.
My drive was not showing in device manager, and my last resort was to open my laptop and check everything. Just as i was about to go and grab my screwdriver set, a slight moment of rage overtook me. I opened my drive draw, pushed the drive door closed until it stopped, than i CARRIED ON pushing the drive, and i felt it move ever so slightly, and then i heard a click.

Amazingly this worked, and my drive is now recognised again.
I appreciate that this..erm...method, is not a method most people would try. But just in case everything else fails, give it alittle push, thats all mine took.

Thanks for reading, and hope i have been of some help.

Now i spent alot of time myself going through all these methods, then going through them again, and again, litterally pulling my hair out trying to fix my problem.

CD-RW Door won't open with disc inside

You need to push harder in the pinhole, and do it while the power is off. That pinhole goes directly to a gear. If the gear is stuck and will not turn at all the drive will have to be disassembled to recover the cd.

Dvd writer does not burn on raw file system cds

What OS are you using? I doubt it is the burner. I have the same model burner and it burns everything I try to burn just fine. It works on both my XP SP2 installation and the OS X86 Leopard 10.5.5 installation. I have burned video, data and bootable OS DVDs and CDs in both operating systems.

It may just be Nero. You could try Alcohol 120% or Ultra ISO.
