I purchased a SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx for my Vista machine and all was well. Then I purchased a Windows 7 machine. It would not recognize the devise. I contacted SimpleTech only to be told my model cannot be used on machines newer that the Vista. Recently I purchased a Windows 8.1, did a little research, plugged the SimpleTech into the 8.1 and reformatted it using the Windows feature. The SimpleTech is alive and well on my 8.1.

It should. You may have to Format it.

Ejecting does not remove or turn off the power it merely lets the computer know that the device is not to be used until plugged in again. If the file format is not recognized by your operating system, format the drive and install your computer's file system on it.

It has died. Sorry for your loss. There are sever internal problems that are probably not worth fixing. There are programs you may be able to use to recover the information. Good Luck.

The 2.5 inch external drive (laptop drive) does not require separate power supply because USB cable can supply enough power for this drive. The 3.5 inch external drive (desktop hard drive) requires separate power supply and it depends on the model.
