Download and install Itunes ,download your songs to Itunes,and then turn Itunes on, and plug in your ipod...it will recognize it and then you can download the songs you have downloaded in itunes. I'm assuming its being plugged into a USB port? Have you tried plugging it into a different port. If its still not recognized. go to "Device Manager", then to "USB Serial Bus Controllers" and delete all the ones that are listed. It will not allow you to delete some, just ignore those and delete all the rest, Then reboot your computer, wait until its finished re-installing all the controllers, then plug in your player.

THere are drivers for Windows Server 2008, Windows Home Server, Win 64-bit, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Win Server 2003, Win Me, Windows XP, Win Server 2008 R2, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE I'm not sure if theres is a drivers for Win 7 or Win 8 so if you don't have one you should install Windows Vista or XP driver using compatibility mode

I had the same exact problem as you, and the only way to fix this is to return your Polaroid. I figured out that something goes wrong on the charging system and it dosent charge the battery at all, that explains why when you plug you player into you computer it starts working. You would be better off buying a high quality mp3 player.
