Well, most common failure in the LCD monitor is due to bad caps, worst case will be the lamp assemblies.
So look for bad caps first.

You are probably right. It a cooling issue. it usually happens when your heatsink gets clogged with dust or the coolant fan stops running. I have installed a softare called speed fan which automatically adjusts the fan speed according to the temperature. It will atleast resolve this issue to some extent. Also you are advised to clean the interiors of your PC with a non-static brush or duster(Dont use the normal paint brushes or a dust cloth. The static electricity can damage your chips). If nothing resolves this issue then you are probably looking at a change of heatsink.
