It sounds like the water damage may have caused the down volume button to malfunction. While it may be possible to fix the button, it would require opening up the device and performing some troubleshooting, which can be difficult if you don't have experience with electronics. I had the same problem with my Olympus VN-5000. I found a solution, which appears to reformat the memory. Try to press the STOP and DISP/MENU buttons at the same time for about 2 seconds, and then the display should show "FOR". It will supposedly erase the whole memory, but will at least make the device usable again. I hope this solution works for your model!

I had a similar sounding problem my Olympus VN-5000. I would turn it on, it would show "CHK" for a few seconds, and then "ERR." This persisted despite fresh batteries. The "ERR" message reportedly means a memory error. I found a solution, which appears to reformat the memory. I provide a link to the manufacturer at the bottom; you have to drill down to a chat opportunity from there. I think you are going to have to run the pertinent software in compatibility mode, probably for XP or Windows 7. You could try running the XP driver on an XP machine if you have one collecting dust. That is, if the driver exists in the links at the old posts below. This recorder has been around from at least 2009. Alternatively, you can try the Olympus chat to inquire if a current driver might work on it. I'm under the impression that installation of any driver for the device is a little tricky at the best of times. If you have previously connected the recorder:
1. Make sure the recorder is connected correctly.
2. Open the 'System' control panel: Start menu -> Control Panel -> System.
3. Click the 'Hardware' tab and then click the 'Device Manager' button.
4. Right-click the item that shows as 'Digital Voice Recorder' and choose 'Uninstall' or 'Remove'.
5. Disconnect the recorder.

If you have the software already installed:
1. Open the 'Add / Remove Programs' (Pre-Vista/Windows 7) OR 'Programs and Features' (Vista/Windows 7) control panel: Start menu -> Control Panel -> Add / Remove Programs (Pre-Vista/Windows 7) OR Programs and Features (Vista/Windows 7).
2. Click 'Olympus Digital Wave Player' and choose 'Change / Remove' or 'Uninstall'.

Please restart the computer before reinstalling if you had connected the recorder or installed the software previously.

If you are sure you have erased all files in all folders then it would not do any harm to run FORMAT from the menu.

This may well clear your "Memory Full" message and get your device working again.

We had a similar problem (it wouldn't turn on), and it turned out that we hadn't taken off both layers of clear packaging from the batteries. It now works.

download windows media player for mac from the microsoft website or you may download flip4mac to get the files to play on your mac

I bout the Olympus ws-21os that supports mac but it only supports wma so I had to buy easy wma that converts wma to aiff, wav,m4a or mp3 for $10.00

Purchase a new one. They are inexpensive and liquid damage is sometimes not repairable.

To reset the settings back to English:

1. Set the DM-20 to Voice mode using the blue switch on the back voice recorder.
2. Remove the DM-20 from Hold using the gray switch on the back of the voice recorder.
3. Press and hold the DISPLAY/MENU button on the front of the DM-20 for at least 3 seconds. The menu list is displayed.
4. Click the REWIND button six times to highlight the Format menu item.
5. Click the PLAY button to select the Format menu item. A message will be displayed with Cancel and Start options.
6. Click the REWIND button once to highlight Start.
7. Click the PLAY to select Start. A message stating that the data will be cleared will display briefly. Then a message asking if you are sure will be displayed.
8. Click the REWIND button once to highlight the Start menu item to continue with the format.
9. Click the PLAY select the Start menu item and begin the format. The format progress bar will appear. When it is complete the menu items will be in the English language.
