Nook HD will not charge or turn on
It may be your cable, I jsut had to replace mine and I had it under a year, the Nook is known to have troubles with the cable. See if your Nook is still under warranty and call customer service, if not, you may have to buy a new one.

Shows 99% won't open and can't shut down
You can first try doing what's called doing a Soft Reset. It's the first and preferred method to try as you don't lose any files or settings. Hold the power button until the Nook turns itself off. In most cases that will be twenty seconds or more. Then turn the power back on by holding the power button down for about two seconds. Hopefully this will allow you to complete a normal boot process.
The second and more dramatic way to get a working Nook back is what's called doing a Hard Reset. This process will put your Nook back to "Just Out of the Box" mode. You will lose any files and settings stored internally inside the Nook itself. The good part in all this is it won't touch anything stored externally on your external SD Cards.
To do a Hard Reset
Turn the NOOK off completely.
Hold the Power button and Home (n) buttons. The device will turn on. Continue to hold both buttons until the device shuts off once again (~15-20 seconds).
Turn the device on normally. It will prompt for a factory reset. Press the Home button twice to confirm.
-------
The important part in the above is to be sure you start the Nook via holding down both the power button and the Home (n) buttons at the very same time and keep them both pressed down until the Nook turns itself off.

It's part of your profile. Press the top left corner of your screen where it says YourName's NOOK. Select your profile and select edit profile and select edit profile. Your profile will change to edit YourName. Select this and select change image. This will call up the Galley app to choose from the images. The default startup images are kept in the avatars folder. The default startup image is the green apple.

Touch screen wont work
Simple touch glowlight 2012 model. My touch screen wouldn't work. I had full battery. I couldn't power down using the power down button, I had to force it to shut down. I couldn't slide the unlock nor could I turn pages with screen. I only could turn pages with buttons on side. After much research I found that it just needed a simple cleaning. I used a vacuum to gently suck out dust in the crevice of the screen. Or you can use a canister of air to blow the dust out. Do this at an angle so that you don't blow it deeper into the crevice. Also, Use a cloth misted with H2O (almost dry) to wipe the screen from edge to edge. These screens use sensors that are from the side of the screen.. Debri will block the sensors. Mine works great. Too bad I already purchased another one after I found the solution.
