Yes you can, three or four times before you would need to alter the value of the capacitors to allow for the parallel effect electrically.

Have you let the loco charge first? The instructions are a bit vague but the loco needs to charge before it runs. Not easily understood from the instructions and many have spent some frustrating minutes wondering why their train wouldn't move.

The voltage regulator is part LM78L05. You might want to check the two diodes are ok as well 'D1' & 'D2', sadly I can't see markings on them.

Strange indeed? Is there more that power to track connector going to the track. If so one may have been incorrectly orientated? The only other thing I think of that would cause a short between the two rails on the track is perhaps a set of dodgy points. sorry couldn't be more helpful.

It sounds like the gears have worn out or come adrift somehow. You will be able to get replacement gears from any of the Lionel authorised dealers Lionel Authorized Dealers or their replacement parts service Replacement Parts

The instructions are sometimes a bit vague: for example, once switched on the train needs to sit and charge before it runs, but that is not very evident from the instructions and many folks spent some frustrating minutes wondering why the train wouldn't move.

Check to make certain that the batteries in the remote are good. Make sure that when using the remote, you orient the antenna in an upright position and are within 6 to 8 feet of the locomotive. If the train has been running successfully and the problem has only just started, clean your wheels and the pick up roller on the locomotive removing any fluff etc. then clean the track. Are you using the transformer that came with the train set? This has forward, reverse, and neutral available?

Have you changed transformers? You can also make a Lionel run in opposite direction by using the throttle control...just go to stop and then to power and then back to no stop and right to power. That often works.

Check out for train shows. They usually have parts vendors. Search the Internet for train parts vendors or even for the specific part.

Try eBay. Otherwise, search the Internet for model train stores and search their sites for the car.

Search the Internet. Also contact the manufacturer, they may be able to email you a PDF file containing the instructions.

First contact Lionel. If they can't help then try any local hobby store dealing in model trains. Search the Internet. There are also bidding and sales sites like eBay, Amazon, and Craigslist.
