The only thing you can check is that the battery contacts are clean and shiny. If they have had a depleted battery in there for a long time, they may have corrosion. What size is your SDXC Card? The maximum supported it 2 Gb. Before suspecting the camera, I'd simply try another memory card in it. Memory cards can and do fail and often can behave inconsistently before they fail completely.
