Kenmore Freezers - Page 8 - Popular Questions, Answers, Tips & Manuals
Why has my freezer--including the automatic ice maker, on a Kenmore Elite side-by-side fridge, suddenly shut down?
Hello Sherry;
My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.
1.) If the refrigerator shut down for 20-30 minutes:
Your refrigerator goes into a defrost cycle every 8-10 hours. The refrigerator shuts down for 20-30 minutes. At this time, you have a heater under your freezer cooling coils (Evaporator). The heater turns on and melts the frost off your cooling coils. Then the refrigerator turns back on. This is where you get the term; "Frost Free".
2.) If your refrigerator has shut down and is still shut down:
a.) If it shut down going into defrost - Some refrigerators have mechanical/electrical defrost timers that are easy to access and manually bring it out of defrost. Unfortunately, your refrigerator defrost cycle is built into your main control board.
b.) You main control board is bad. This is a primary electrical part. It is not a uncommon failure. The control board is about $85.00 and easily replaced.
I have faith in you Sherry, lets replace it:
1.) The new control board will come in a silver bag. This is a anti-static bag. Static electricity will not the board out. Ground your self by rubbing your hands on a steel object.
Move the refrigerator out to where you can freely stand behind it. Unplug the refrigerator. There is a metal cover plate about 10" x 12" on the back. Remove the screws and lift up. There are tabs on the bottom of this cover. Now, the control board in front of you is held in place by small white retaining pins. On each side of the pin is a small leg. With one hand squeeze these legs and the other hand pull the control board toward you to free the board from the leg. There are several pins around the board. Now that the board is free, take the new board, systematically going around the board one connector at a time. Remove one connector from the old board and connect it to the new board. Repeat this one connector at a time. Each connector at the top has a clip that you must squeeze to disconnect. Make sure on the new board you hear the connector click. Do not pull on the wires. The connectors are fool proof. The connectors are designed to only fit one connection size. Remount the board on the pins. put back cover on and plug in.

check and empty the drain pan, you should be able to gain access by removing the vent grill below the door if there is one. The pan is under the unit somewhere. There is also a drain tube, make sure its not blocked with ice.
How do I get the open door chime to stop on Kenmore Fridge?
I had this problem also. My problem was that the drainage tube that keeps the refrigerator compartment dry was plugged up with the foil backing used in the freezer compartment. This foil backing is used to line the closed cell foam which insulates the defrost heat fins from coming in contact with the plastic back panel. It took a service call from a local repairman two times to unplug the line. We peeled off the foil lining which was the source of the plug.
This solution stopped the "door open"/"instant freeze" cycle sound. My fridge is about 6 years old.
Hope this helps. Best wishes!
My freezer Model # 253.23024101 is making a "howling" noise. Any idea what the problem might be?
Its a fan motor that you hear. Its little and its hiding behind those plastic panels inside. The motor is not considered oil able but is definitely replaceable and generally inexpensive. I would say its probably a good idea to get somebody with experience to pull the necessary panels otherwise you may end up looking for things that aren't made anymore. Hope this helps and good luck.
Freezer works fine but sides get really warm
Try clearing all vents - inside (make sure vents not covered - in fridge and freezer) and outside (gently vacuum - the coil areas in the back and bottom of fridge)
May be overworking itself to stay cold
Does Kenmore Elite upright freezer reach -20 degrees celsius, where is the info?
Hi,
Best way I can answer this is to purchase the right equipment for the job. A domestic freezer is not designed to work like that, although it may get there in temp it won't hold it. Recovery is slower then the industrial unit you seek. Domestic unit warranties are void if used for commercial settings (i.e. lunch rooms, offices, lab's, etc...) I wish I had a better answer for you but if you need a specific temperature get the correct equipment for the job. Good Luck I’m happy to help further over the phone at

Why wont my freezer wont freeze everything else does
Try clearing all vents - inside (make sure vents not covered - in fridge and freezer) and outside (gently vacuum - the coil areas in the back and bottom of fridge)
Air needs to circulate in both parts (dependent on eachother)
Why
if the compressor is running but not cooling most likely you have a freon leak in the sealed system, you can tell by looking at the evaporator coil, the coil should have an even frost pattern covering it,if frost is just on top you have a freon leak, also if you have a defrost problem and the coil is covered with ice this also will keep it from getting cold, look at the coil to see.good luck

You have a Kenmore upright, which you set on ZERO? WHY?
Every time you open the door all of the cold air falls out and it has to start over in the cool down cycle, the fan stops to NOT push all of the COLD out while the door is open - you should consult a professional. Not for the freezer, for your ability to understand.
